Live scope is definitely a nice tool to have in the arsenal and I have no problem with people using it. That being said I’m definitely a budget kayak fisherman (wife and 2 kids taking priority in my house). I rely heavily on the wisdom and knowledge of experience and enjoy each chance I get to spend a day on the water my favorite hobby [emoji226]. If I ever get the chance to use livescope in person I’m sure I will love it as for now just looking to possibly add a fish finder to my tool box to potentially increase my odds for the catch. Any advice on a budget friendly fish finder for kayaks? I do see having some rules in place for tournaments however with the use of live scope but as for the blue collar fisherman who can hit the water when he can I’ll take any advantage I can get. Anyways new guys input on the topic and again nothing can replace for me all the knowledge I gather from this free resource of experienced fisherman on crappie.com. Thanks guys and tight lines

Although I have not fished any tournaments this year, our local Club has a LS and Non LS division. I think that is a very wise decision! I don’t have LS, but sure wouldn’t turn it down.
I'm certainly not against new technology. I like having every advantage at my disposal. I don't like seeing the technology used to hurt our fisheries. I know there are guys who will use LS in bad ways (taking over the limits, snagging, etc.) and I hope they get caught. Call me naive, old fashioned, or just dumb but, I think most real fishermen will try to do right. I do admit though it is cool to see that jig that close to the fish and see the reaction, unless they go the other way.
I refrained from commenting for five pages on this post since there was a lot of negative comments toward people with the Live view sonars and I would like to offer my personal insight.
I have the new Hummingbird Mega Live and it’s a game changer for me.
Prior to adding ML, I have dam near every bell and whistle you could get on three graphs. I have spent the last four years adding linked electronics and a remote controlled trolling motor.
I fish every week and sometimes multiple days. I love chasing the thump and seeing a bowed up rod. I love taking friends and having them giggle at all the action and a filled livewell
Prior to ML, it use to be multiple rods, as in 8 across the bow pushing jigs and sometimes 8 across the rear. It was nothing to see 8 or more rods with tandem hooks bent from one or more fish. It’s a rush and it wasn’t hard to put fish in the livewell.
My true joy comes from deep vertical presentations and feeling the thump. You could see the fish In the trees or brush on side imaging and down imaging, but it was difficult to pinpoint and target them. So when I had the opportunity to get the Mega Live in November, I literally ran to get it.
The things you first notice are what the fish are doing in your normal spots. And it’s crazy to see how much they move in the school. I truly spent two weeks just watching the screen and noticing what the fish are doing and complete opposite of what i use to think. To see some fish suspended, some on structure and some sitting on the bottom was truly enlightening and went against everything I’ve been taught or read. It has opened my eyes and given me a wealth of knowledge that has made me rethink how and where I fish.
So to think that this new technology will reduce or deplete the population is over thought. How can my one single jig compare to the 16+ jigs I USE to push when spider rigging and pulling? I put more fish in the livewell when spider rigging. I normally don’t even keep fish anymore. I do catch bigger fish now but I release them so them can hopefully grow bigger. And that’s if I can convince this bigger fish to bite my jig. I’ve seen more big fish move away from my jig, boat shadow and trolling motor that it makes it even more difficult. I’ve spent hours working on a single fish nosed up on a tree thst wouldn’t committ.
So again, how could my single jig be more of a threat than 16+ jigs that are covering more width and acreage in a single day than I ever could? And if you truly saw how many freaking fish are in the water, you’d laugh.
So sorry for a long rant but I’m still not sorry for having this in my boat. Just my .02 and some days it’s not worth that.
That's exactly what I've seen with the 3 friends that has it. They send me a few pictures of really nice fish on their scales where as they used send me stacked livewells. If you can go out and get 10-12 fish on demand there's no need to keep a limit for tough times.

I agree livescope has changed fishing and made poor fishermen into really good fisherman. BUT just because everybody can catch fish don't mean that is will hurt fishing. People need to learn to stop keeping every fish they catch. I caught thousands of fish every year before livescope and I only keep about 20 fish a year to eat and release the rest of them. With livescope it has helped me catch bigger fish and it still catch thousands and still only keep about 20 a year...
We surely don’t catch thousands or even hundreds. My wife and I only keep 50 or so a year. We are adding LS to our boat now and are looking forward to using it, we may catch more but our amounts kept will remain the same. I am hoping to enter a tourney someday but that’s a long way down the road. In the meantime we will continue to consume what we keep and share with our elderly neighbors.
I don't keep very many either
"cherry picking" the largest fish is often the big gripe with LS .
this is actually a blessing for me, just saying , focus is key .
they only focus on the individuals and I only target the masses .
as that old joke goes , are you the older bull or the younger bull up on the hill is the question ? :Roflrotfl
My favorite fishing hole is a little less than sixty acres. One to four feet along the banks and a few eight foot holes here and there. I know where the blowdowns and most of the submerged stumps are. Doesn’t take long to locate the Crappie. A few months ago I bought my first unit…. a Striker Vivid 7CV. I doubt I’ll use it much on that pond, although I may take it there to learn how to use the unit. Never even played with one before. I bought it as a timesaver on new and/or bigger water. I probably won’t buy anything more complicated than that. I had a cat once and I used to dangle a toy on a string in front of him. We both eventually got bored with it.
I’m sixty-eight years old and I hunted through the years of the long bow vs. compound vs. crossbow debate. At the end of that debate there were more deer than ever in the woods.
I don’t see electronics as something that will endanger our favorite fish. I think most true fishermen have a good moral compass and will act accordingly. Outlaws will be outlaws. Thank goodness they are in the minority.

Oh, forgot to add that Richard Gene and Jimmy Houston are my favorite YouTube fishermen. They have fun with it and that is what it’s all about for me!

I fish Fork, Lake of the Pines, Cedar Creek, Lavon and Tawakoni mostly here is in Texas. Most of these are massive lakes and they have acres and acres of standing timber. There is no way you can fish these lake efficiently if you don't have electronics. Tawakoni a bridge that is 2 miles long. Try locating a productive bridge coloum among the 200 you have to choose from with no electronics. If I just fished my home lake I could get a way with no electronics. I don't need it fishing for the spawn because he can visually see the spawning grounds here. Once they come out of the shallows you had better be able to locate them.

Wonder what the next sonar up grades will be? Sonar has came a long way from the humminbird super sixty I had years ago. People thought it was probably going to hurt fishing back then also. But we're still catching fish today. Take what you can eat and release the rest. Build fish habitat. If you build it they will come. :twocents
I still work, and am fortunate enough that I can afford a real time sonar unit. Because I work and have a long daily commute, I don't have much time to fish. I certainly won't hurt the population under any circumstances anyway, but have been considering one just to eliminate non productive water during the time I do have on the water. Spider rigging never appealed to me because the thump is where it's at for me. [emoji16]

On the affording things guys its always up to you but there ways to get things without having to pay interest and on time. I bought my carbon 9 with the three in one transducer for 799 when bass pro put them on sale few months ago I wanted the better resolution screen. The active target bundle was 1500 everywhere. I offered a guy on e bay 1350 he took it. You can pay on time with almost no interest there. I use pay pal credit for a lot of things but always wheeling and dealing selling something. Pay something else off. when something sells. This new to us Tracker 190tx even swap for a custom Harley.
the three in one transducer was perfect on the stick steer boat cause all electronics were on the front. Got on Bass Boat central found a Elite FS 7 a guy just bought a high end bass boat it came on it. bought it for $450 with no transducer. I already have mine from the carbon. . That and the three in one transducer will go beside the dash and a back up DI 7 with Nav just in case one unit dies. .
I'v always use 4 to 5 year old tech stuff but this livescope and active target has changed how we can fish. Have three lowrance graphs on the ocean boat, older 6.5 KW 4 foot open ray radar for the birds only paid 1200 for that those puppys are 5000 now. , and night vision . All bought used. Just like the FS 7 that came yesterday.
Those boys on BBC are going to have the newest MO-better stuff two days before it hits the market so scroll all the way down on the main page to electronics and there always good deals there.
Hauled cars for a living. Never owned a new car never will. There is no way to copy livescope or Active target in any other form , they are in a class by itself. Its not a matter if if you need it we all fished without it most of our lives but without it now, your running behind.
One thing most don't even think about is screen resolution . Most units are 400/800 like the FS 7 I just bought but the Carbon is 800/1300 and I get pictures like the lowrance shot they use for their selling image. The livescope Garmin I used on my friends boat which is for sale by the way was 400/800 Night and day guys between the units so when things come on sale like that carbon 9 with the three in one transducer that is the time to buy. I ended up getting a Carbon 9 with the Higher resolution, three in one transducer , Active target all for 2200 dollars. Sold my pontoon when I knew I was going to get the tracker 9 paid off the active target and this 2 grand of new stuff I got for the Tracker. I had put on time on pay pal.
The things I post like my home made rod holders for 30 dollar or using a 35 dollar attwood adjustable pedestal 11.5 to 17.7 for the carbon 9 mount are some of the ways I save money and are 10x more effective than those high end mounts everyone uses all the way down on the floor. Got a 5000 dollar graph aimed upwards at you in front the foot control I'm like really?? LOL Pros use the high end stuff. That in no way means its the best. Building my own worm farm. Already got the box ready just to cold to start it just yet and I do 99% of the mod on all the hobbies myself.
Used not abused has always worked for me. Hope this helped on the pay pay credit and maybe it can help someone to get a garmin or Lowrance and keep in line with the rest of us that are watching things happen underwater now. :)
I'm sixty years old , for the first 58 years I didn't have the benefit of FFS ! I figure if I get to fish with live scope for another 8 years the fish are still ahead ! Plan on reeking havoc with new electronics till they pry them from my cold dead hands
As for the big fish being picked off. It's laughable.
1) we're catching fish we never even thought existed for the most part, by conventional methods. Sure a blind hog, but tourny weights have proven we're picking off fish we never caught before.
2) I'd say 75% of the live sonar fishermen I know and interact with, and follow on various social media outlets, see on social media, meet on the lake, etc, aren't keeping the big ones anyway. Forward thinking enough to save or earn enough to buy the tech, usually equates to forward thinking enough to know it is a limited resource, catch, photo, release, and eat the 10-12" fish.
Yes there are exceptions.
If you ever need someone to ride with you to take an extra limit. PM me I will come running.

can you see your float on LS , just wondering :dono.......:Rofl

Yes
I always tell my buddy where the fish are in relation to his kayak pedal drive in the water. It's easily seen on livescope.
in my opinion there isnt much debate on livescope type electronics for sure , it works past well a good bit.
when I get to use one, I learn something new fairly often .:highfive
I can see even better technology on the horizon , not sure what but it is the works i bet
They have to build better to get more of the money being spent on electronics
We decided not to go live scope. Right now the fish are in the deepest part of the lake. Boats everywhere. Most I see are just enjoying the day. The LS crowd are watching their screen. For example.....watched a man fish his live scope the other day. His 10ish year old some was on his own. Son tried to get his dad's attention with no luck. Boy ended up sitting down with his phone. I have nothing against them. Just not for me.
it can be really addicting , most ls folks do just that most of the day , seen very few doing anything else .
it can cause a determination unknown to the average guy that befuddles the imagination .
it should come with a warning about not being able to look away .....:Rofl
Perhaps they need to make VR livescope goggles.
And scuba gear.

What about the fishing flogger it's real time for sure. :deadhorse:Rofl
LS and will hurt the population period. You can't take the large crappie and not hurt the fishery. The game and fish people won't react until the crappie are in trouble. I have ls had it just after it came out. What you will find if you fish a lot are the big crappie stay in schools and they spend little time near cover. When you find them you can decimate the school. I don't keep more than I can eat. I think the limits need to be lowered and size limit In acted. I fish some rather small lakes in Oklahoma and I have seen the impact. I release all crappie over 1.5 lbs and clean those one pounders. I know a lot of guys that are game hogs and it sickens me. We need to protect our fisheries I will get of my high horse now sorry for the rant.
one thing for certain lots of folks have become legends in their own minds with the new technology .
it bothers me to see them holding up 3 lb range fish all beat up from the livewell and then "claiming" they released all of them.
one smaller lake in these parts in particular was not well known for "BIG" crappie some years ago and now it is STILL not known for large crappie .
the masses of semi pro and pro guys all ran there dreaming of huge crappie when they found out about it holding lots of large fish and flat out destroyed the fishery .
its been years now and it still hasn't returned to what it once was and it was done before LS was even a dream
so to those that say it can't happen , that is not the truth .
New guy here so pardon me if this has already been beat to death....:)
I dont get it. I see guys on the lake sitting in the front of their boat staring at a huge screen, jigging their bait occasionally, just staring at the screen. Watching a school of fish interact with their bait. Then they jerk one out, all the while still watching the screen. Horse it in like they are being timed and toss it in the livewell and right back to their face planted to a screen. What the heck? That (to me, my opinion) is not what I'd call fishing. Its closer to Playstation. Id rather sit at home and play Bassmasters video game on the couch than do the livescope thing, about the same to me. Ive seen guys sit for hours staring at a screen on the lake. No skill in reading water, no skill in detecting subtle strikes, not much of any fishing skills at all. And I too have seen guys almost wipe out smaller schools of crappie using it. They dont look around, enjoy the beauty of nature, notice the birds, wildlife, nothing really but stare at a screen. No thanks....
The key to me is figuring out the bite. I just installed LS and am looking forward to using it. My wife and I will still enjoy our quiet times old school float fishing, sharing laughs and taking in God’s creation. We don’t keep a lot of fish and return more than we keep. A good day for Buckeye in 10 or so caught and brought home for a couple supper meals.
Looks like even more "new" is coming to town!!
