Plus, maybe lightens the body for less jig lead for balance, making it drop slower but stay level.

To me, level attitude and slow drop are important.

i have a bud who loves that big ole umbrella looking one on a road runner head and i promise it will hurt some big slab crappie . :cheers2
he and i used to compete a bit against each other on fish size and numbers ...
and he often managed bigger fish than i did when he used it .
