I use 8# hi viz yellow while spider rigging on Greer's Ferry. I don't know if you have fished there but that's some pretty clear water. When casting a jig I use moss green in 4# but have never tried hi viz while casting. When using single pole with a jig I switch back to the hi viz.
My way of thinking towards "spooked" fish or "line shy" fish .... even in clear water conditions .... is that it is more likely that something else is a bigger factor than the color of your line. It could be any number of things, like you, your boat, or the shadows produced by either, they could just be in a neutral mood, there could have been a predator in the neighborhood recently, or noise created by you (even from a respectable distance).
I've fished with a buddy that has a Livescope, and watched fish come up to both our jigs and either bite or turn away. He's using clear mono & I'm using hi-vis line, and there was no noticeable difference in the reaction of the fish.
Greers, esp around Heber is nearly crystal clear. If hi-viz doesn't affect crappie there, then it shouldn't anywhere. I use 5lb hi-viz braid on 12' jig poles, Mr. Crappie 6lb hi-viz on casting crappie rods and even have some hi-viz fluoro one one casting rod. For trout and some bream, I have trout sos in 6lb in light green or fluoro in clear. I don't usually use a leader. I don't know if bream are line shy, because I have caught many of them on hi-viz while crappie fishing.
I use hi viz with no problems.
Pline fluorocarbon 6lb test. Thin as many 4lb test lines with the added strength. I also like the fact that it doesn't knot up like some of the other lines I've used
Other than for bait presentation of line size. The color and line size hasn't been a problem.
My local waters are pretty stained so a clear line is not needed. I use 4lb braid when vertical jigging and 6lb hi-vis line when casting. The white bass run during the spring is the only time line clarity matters. Those fish swim up creeks to spawn and your line had better be clear or you will go fishless. The water is stained but those white bass want a small bait on small diameter line. They act like freaking trout this time of year. I use 2lb clear fluorocarbon when chasing them. I can't tell you many times I have showed up on the creek and caught white bass on every catch will everyone else using 1/8 jigs on 10lb line goes fishless. White bass typically hit anything you throw at them but these critters only want a tiny bait with spider thin line.
Having fished for crappie in cold, clear winter conditions when they are lethargic and finicky, I can safely say that crappie don’t care what line you use. Other species tend to be sometimes and I use a clear mono leader big enough and long enough to get the job done. Here in FL where most of the water is stained to some degree, most every fish here is unaffected by the bright colored line. Used to use Stren gold years ago for LMB, brother used clear and scoffed at my line. He never did outfish me though.
I know that I will catch some slack for this but I use everything from clear mono to spiderwire line including hi vis line. My lake is 1 of the cleanest in the state, so I agree with everyone else that crappie are not line shy. As far as strength I use anywhere from 6lb to 25lb test, depends on what I grabbed win replacing. The only one that I have never broke off is the spiderwire, but I don't like how easy it gets twisted and tangled.
