I'd go one step further and make the holes further apart to accomodate the reels. Otherwise a good Idea.

Yeah I thought about that, i got more rods then reels. And I'll put the ones with the reels on my bass pro rod rack

It appears to me that you could do the same thing by lowering the bottom shelf (with holes) a few inches to allow clearance for the reels and then all you'd have to do is rotate the rods to give the reels the clearance they needed away from each other.
