My two cents: Berkley Flicker Shad in size 4 or 5 work great for crappie certain times of year. They aren't terribly expensive, they rattle, and they're not made of balsa (so they're more durable).

I used a spinnerbait during the spawn one year and it opened my eyes. A blade a little bigger than a nickel and a 1/8 head with a curl tail. Cast it near anything along the bank near deeper water and THUMP. I would imagine that a crank would produce about the same once you find where they're hanging.
Use them all summer and fall. Cast Bandit 200s & Norman Middle N or Little Deep N. I pull the same baits but cast them more.
