Not gonna argue with you about that Nimrod, as far as the mud that really isn't an issue, someone wading shallow water would stir up more mud than that chains do. There is a concesus here that what the chains stir up actually triggers some bites, ask ScottV about those he caught following me last spring fishing rite behind the chains.
I use a chain 90% of the time living here in the Ms delta. A 10-15mph wind here is usually hectic in this flat land. Never slowed me down on catching either.

Rees you are dead on . A chain will get stuck in certain situations . I mostly use mine in rivers not lakes .
