Hey PPG,
"Introduced in 1968 the Shell Oil Company's "Mr. President" promotional contest tapped into the public fascination with the 1968 Presidential race between former Vice-President Richard M. Nixon and the incumbent Vice-President Hubert Humphrey. The game, as described on the outside of the game card folder shown below was a promotion where customers would receive a free "coin" with each visit to their local Shell Service Station. The "coins" were to be stored on the inside of the center-fold game card (see below) until a winning grouping was assembled. They could then be redeemed for the advertised prize."

Further research finds that these were part of a Shell Oil game back in 1992. There were eight different coins to collect. You’d get a seal foil pouch every time you bought gas and inside the pouch were the coins but some of the pouches contained instant winner coins winning up to $50,000 in gold bars. The coins were brass but you could buy a complete set in bronze.
I did see mention of an earlier game around 1968 again using presidential coins but I believe they were aluminum. I guess I missed out on both of those because Shell wouldn't let me have a Shell card so I used Texaco.
