If you know anyone that works for power company, telecom, gas company you might be able to have an endless supply of material. End trimmings off of jobs. Actually waste that is thrown away.
Also if you have any small sawmills nearby, we get trimmings. Where they square up the round log, to make lumber.
I have wanted to try boo. But don’t have access to any here.

Sycamores grow right along the water so they don't have to be hauled and they sink themselves without weight (but it's best to put some weight on it so it doesn't move around with the water motion.) Pinoaks do the same but are very hangy.

I have best luck with cane in a bucket. Small amount of sack Crete to hold down
