    Default Saline/Larto Weekend

The wife and I were able to get off a little early on Friday, so we ended up making it to the camp about 5 that afternoon. Excited to be there, we quickly unloaded our gear and got the boat in the water by 5:30. I motored to a group of cypress trees right by the camp that are usually good to me and I dropped the first jig in the water. It was immediately inhaled by a nice white perch and I pull him into the boat. I turn around to look at my wife and she was hooked up too. Now the excitement really hit me. We pulled 7 nice fish in the first 10 minutes of fishing. That’s when I made the mistake and opened my mouth by telling her, “we are about to kill em.” Once I said this, the bite stopped and we could not buy another bite. We fished till close to dark and decided to throw out about 10 jugs lines before heading back to the camp to try and catch a few catfish.

Moving on to Saturday, I was super excited to get out on the water. My wife doesn’t like to get up early on the weekend, so I decided this would be the perfect time to get out on the boat and locate some fish. Excited to go, I woke up, drank some coffee and headed out without eating breakfast. It was still dark, so I went to the jug lines I threw out the night before and had two nice blue cats, one about 8 pounds, the other about 4. I picked up everything quickly as I could see it was starting to break daylight. I quickly motored to the same group of cypress we caught on the day before and started to fish. NOTHING, so I moved on. Headed to another area where I usually catch, but NOTHING! So I headed out into the Saline Lake, and gotNOTHING! By this time, I started getting nervous about putting my wife and 4 year old boy on some fish and was also getting frustrated. My wife texted me at 9:45 and said they were eating breakfast, advising me she would be ready to go by 10:15. I motored to the camp and ate a little breakfast to recharge from the beating I just took. I explained to her that it wasn’t going good and she said, “well at least we’re not working.” She was ABSOLUTELY right, so we loaded up and headed back out. I made my way across the lake to another area that I hadn’t fished yet. Stopped to fish a nice cypress with a big root system and WHAM, finally a fish! We troll around the area a pick up a few more, but nothing consistent, so we moved on. We did this all day picking up fish here and there but never really found a good pattern. We worked hard for the fish we caught and ended up burning 3/4 tank of gas, but ended the day with 18 white perch and the two catfish from the jug lines. We didn’t plan on fishing Sunday, but I was too tired to go load the boat on the trailer, so I left it in the water for the night.

On Sunday morning, I left the camp about 7:45 to go load the boat on the trailer. Once I got to the boat, I decided to try the group of cypress trees we caught on Friday afternoon since it was 100 yards away from the boat. I trolled over to the group of trees and dropped a jig next to a big cypress not expecting much. My bait immediately gets swallowed by a huge slab. I drop back in and catch another giant slab. Now I’m excited, but I know I don’t have much time, so I fish for another 30 minutes, pulling 8 more decent fish from the same tree, tallying up to a total of 10 for Sunday morning. I left them biting, but had somewhere to be, so I had to leave. All in all, it was great to be out there with the family and got a nice mess to eat. It’s just weird how these fish change from day to day, but I guess that is why I like fishing them so much.

Sorry for the long report, but I wanted to show that persistence pays off. Bottom picture is from Saturday and the top picture is of the first 2 big slabs I caught Sunday morning.

Yes that lake seems to change from day to day. I have done something similar out there before, not catch much on Friday or Saturday and then do good on Sunday morning. Thanks for the report.
