    Default Night Crawlers

Thinking about starting a worm box with night crawlers....not the smaller red wigglers.....as a kid we found them around saw mills.....anybody know what bait shops around Baton Rouge carry them.....or know of a saw mill I could go get some....

You might find some around your house. Check under piles of oak leaves in cool moist areas. The crawlers around here are smaller and much more lively than the ones I find in the bait houses. You might check with that cypress lumber mill out on Hwy 190. You will probably need a secure box for them in a cool spot. If there is any cracks, they will leave. Good luck.

    PS-
Two methods of collecting worms that always worked for me. One is to mix up some dish washing detergent and water and dumping on the ground. The soap runs them up to the surface.

My favorite and most foolproof one is to take an old outdoor extension cord and attach a welding rod to one of the neutrals with electrical tape. Just push the rod into the ground anywhere worms hide and they come up quick, fast and in a hurry. Just pick them up off the ground and it doesn't kill them since you're only giving them a mild shock.

You could substitute a car battery for power if you want to. 110v works better. Just be careful with the electricity!

Thought you found them. Last night I watched those u-Tubes about 5 hours. Mostly catching shellcrackers in Florida, then couple more hours with worms. I had to resist getting a light to go out looking for worms. why I resisted was it was past midnight

If ya know anyone with horses just go dig in the pile of shavings where they dump after mucking stalls. Dig on the older sides as the fresh stuff is usually too hot for em. Or anyone with compost bins should have a pile of em too.

Dig down towards the bottom. Or right after a rain will bring em up.

Grand pops had a "worming stick". It was a hoe handle that he cut several rings in about 3" apart (rings about 3/8" thick and deep). He would take that stick, hold it to the ground firmly, take another piece of the hoe handle, and rub briskly back and forth. What happened was the worms couldn't stand the vibrations and would come screaming to the top of the ground. It always worked for him.

We dug at the horse barns when I was a kid. Also, next time it rains a lot ,after you build your box, I'll collect a couple hundred off my driveway for you.
