    Default Pigeon help

Been over 15 years since I've fished there. How does the recent rain effect the water level along with the Atchafalaya river? What gauge can I use to determine the water level and at what reading is the best fishing? I'm thinking falling is best like at old river but I just can't remember. Ole man old mind. I do remember fishing the upper flats and hiking in with a tent and canoe cause the water was to low to float a boat and the fish practically jumped in the canoe. We figured the 6 of us caught 800 fish in two days but we only kept what we wanted to haul out along with our gear and it wasn't many, but we had a blast catching em. I want to try pigeon tomorrow if possible so any info would be appreciated.

Wow that's a lot of fish, I'm not doubting it at all. I can remember a time working in Venice la carving 196 bass in 2 evenings, I tell people about that and they say no way. Not much help, but welcome

Water way up...not the best idea IMO...you can use the Lake Murphy gauge...or atchafalaya River at bayou sorrel... Or even to some extent atchafalaya River Butte la rose or upper grand river...I would try on the other side of the levee belle River, lake veret or stephensville if it were me...HTH...

Maybe jig rig will chime in. I believe he fishes the Pigeon a lot. You might try sending him a PM.

Thanks Pastor and Gonfishn but I located the information I was looking for and somewhat recalled the levels desired to fish the basin in that area. Search button is your friend! Your right on Gonfishn, water too high. I went Saturday to Grand river and the water was dirty and moving too fast. Managed 5 nice keepers. I'm thinking bayou Sherman in the morning for my last trip of the year.

Best of luck... You are a good fisherman if you pulled 5 nice ones out of upper grand river in these conditions. Congrats...

My mistake sir, that would be Grand Bayou in north Verret, not Grand River. No access to TNT!

Here are some pictures from bayou sorrel. The water is WAYYYYY up. The picture with the platform..the water is usually so slow I can't touch it from my boat.

The water seems about 4-5feet high.

I look at the National Weather Service Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service and Sorrell gauge. If I were to fish the basin I'd go further south 30" canal area.

I have a camp across the levee from the Pigeon landing and fish that area a lot. Last I looked the level at the Sorrell locks was around 9'+ and rising expected to get to 12'+ in the next week or so, and that's if they don't open Morganza any time soon. Best fishing anywhere around there is when that gauge reads 3.5'-5' and steady or falling. I would stay away from the spillway area for the time being as the water is way to high to do any good if you don't know exactly where you are going unless you get lucky.
