I fish the same water that you do. Lake Verret, Grassy, Bayou Black. I use cork about 95% of the time. When the cork layes flat, twichhes while falling back after I pop the cork all equals a hook set. Also alot of times you think its a perch messing with the jig tail but have sac a lait bite the same way. Basically any funny movement of the cork - I set the hook.
Thanks fellas, I appreciated the advise. Now I might have to take it to the bayou friday, I said I wasn't going to but, hearing what i have been doing all wrong all this time makes this itch even worse that needs to be scratched pronto! Ordered 100 jigs tonight ready for the long haul.
One thing I believe about shiner fishing.....I hook the shiner under the dorsal fin....some hook it through the eyes....personally, I want to the shiner to see what is coming so I don't want to destroy the eyesight....sometimes the shiner will sit still and not move (cork not moving) then a fish will come close to the shiner to investigate and the shiner will start running around in circles (cork bobbing) and even swim up and cause the cork to lay down sideways...many times right after that the fish will take the shiner and run.....so when I see that shiner start bobbing around, I get ready to set the hook......you think football is exciting....I can feel this just talking about it......Randy knows what I am talking about......Quote:

Haven't used shiners lately but when I do I hook em through the eyes P.S. and they go crazy before they get eaten. Even if they can't see I think they feel other fish using their lateral line. That may be their greatest sense. Usually a bream bite is several light taps. With jigs I set the hook when my cork moves, period. Mostly I tight line but I sure miss that cork sinking. Some times when I use to lay down to sleep I would see the cork going under when I closed my eyes. Now that's sweet dreams!
I tight-line probably 99% of the time. I am addicted to the THUMP just like others are addicted to seeing the cork disappear.
When I fish with Toledo Bend guide Coon Gilespie, we fish brush piles in 15-25 feet of water. he insists to let the cork go down until you cannot see it anymore before setting the hook. And he's right. If you try to set that hook too early, you seldom catch the fish. And he'll say, "He gone". I laugh and laugh and that sucker. Otherwise in shallower water, I set the hook sooner.
to me for the most art pretty much when the cork moves he has it. i set hook right away the longer he has it the more likely he will drop the bait with artificial. and i am the opposite of many i fish fast in general. matches my lifestyle. for some i am not an easy person to fish with. i will slow down if the fish tell me that i have to or if i can catching in a small area and wont to work it over. otherwise i fish fairly fast fishing for the more aggressive active fish
Same here fish fast and move a lot. Also remember. Sacalait tend to feed up so if you fish to deep you won't get many bites. With a cork I usually stay 3-4ft deep
