Still kinda new down here in the Lafayette area and have most of my boating in a Kayak.
Now it seems My wife and kids want to go also, so I run out and buy a boat and head to Lake Dauterive (close to the house) to head down to Fausse point and around. I can tell you first hand if your not from the area there is no water where you think it looks to be,lol.
Can anyone recommend me a chart plotter or gps, something I can load local waterways in and see the depth before running 40mph on a mud bank? Not looking to break the bank.

Welcome to La. Where you live?
Welcome to the forum. I have the Navionics card in my finder/chart plotter. I have it mainly because of the 1 foot contours it displays on Toledo Bend. Down here it shows the canals, etc., but no depth contours. For an idea of what it looks like, check this website:
Navionics Webapp
For something cheaper, I highly recommend the Navionics phone app. Excellent buy for $10. As an additional note since you're new to the area, it's not wise to run 40 mph in the basin unless you know the area well.
Again, welcome. Glad you're here with us. If you have any questions, let us know.

I'm in New Iberia.
Not really a fishing boat but we picked up a Tri-toon boat with a 150 Yamaha (so I had to see how fast). Wanted to pull the kids on a tube and the wife likes taking pics of birds so I'm trying to bring us all together with fishing. If nothing else find a place to anchor out and wet a hook and just talk.
Just sharing a couple pics from our neck of the woods, hope to have fish picks soon.

Be careful in Fausse Point. It is real shallow in most areas; especially when the tide is out(strong north wind). Been going there since the '70s. Also be careful there are some sandbars there too. If you need more PM me.
Those pictures are excellent!!!! Thanks so much for posting.

I have seen people skiing at bird Island (where the camps are) in fausse point. Also all around the state park and all the channels just south of the park are safe to run and fish. I fished Dauterive today for the first time and a guy I met there said the lake is safe from stumps to run it's just not very deep. Also across the levee from Dauterive is bayou benoit. Very good fishing and if you stay in the channels it's safe to run. Very easy to figure out.
Those are great bird pictures....my wife loves it also.....comes along with me fishing to take a few shots of the birds but does not fish......here are some of her pictures......
