I assume you are talking spinning reel. Lighter the better. For crappie and small bass, a very small reel will work fine.

I'm looking to get 2 new reels for Crappie and small Bass.
What size reel and why?
Thanks Lance

I use spinning reels. Size 10 for crappie and 30 for bass.
Thanks for the input. My plan was to go with a 2500 reel, 8lb mono and a 6'6" med action rod. Now I'm thinking that setup may be a little heavy.
Thanks BigTat
If you are just getting into this, I would not spend a lot of money on the reels until you get the feel for what you like.....there are a lot of $30 spinning reels out there that work great.....I still use some that I paid $25 for 20 years ago.....I only use spinning reels......I would use 8# line if using for both fish.....I use Stren gold color......for my bass rods only I use 50# braid(special order).....I only have Shimano reels but there are others that are as good or better.....I hear lots of good things about the Pfleuger and Daiwa reels.....
Remember, your mono line is only as strong as the weakest part....so, if you get a kink or scrape in it that would be the breaking point....that is why I use the 8#.....it would be more forgiving than a smaller test line.....

I fish saltwater and bass a lot but use baitcasters. Now I'm looking to get 2 spinning setups so I can cast lighter lures 1/16 and 1/8oz stuff for crappie and the smaller bass.
Light lines are better for shooting under docks, and don't use anything smaller than 8 lb there because of the chances of that Catfish looking for a morsel.
Daiwa under spin 80 with any 10' graphite rod
