When the water gets to 55 degrees , just fish a shiner under a cork or cast and retrieve a jig/plastic minnow near grass in 5 to 10 feet of water.

Just bought a camp on Toledo Bend just South of Pirate Cove. Been searching the web for info on when, where and how to catch crappie in the
area with not much luck. The wife has never caught a crappie and I'm determined to have her catching this spring. Any information would help.
Thanks

It's tough to miss on the crappie during the spawn on TB.
I fished a good bit in that area your talking about from pirates cove south to the dam.
Your gonna see a lot of folks "strolling" and if your up for it, it's an easy technique to learn that can put fish in the boat pretty quickly.
You want to focus on weedlines from 8-16 or so ft deep, cast a 1/8 or 1/16 oz jig out on a line (heavier with longer to run deeper etc) and use your trolling motor to slowly pull / troll while trying to follow the contour and keep yourself in that depth range. (a good depthfinder at your trolling motor and a good trolling motor are helpful to do this)
good producing colors last year for me were black and chart, acid rain, and one day blue / white. Seemed like a key usually was some chartruese and a really good action swim tail grub type lure.
I did well using this tech around the islands in front of pirates cove... the mouth of the cove itself and other spots like it.
I will certainly be chasing them a bit around there myself. will probably be on the texas side this year when the wind is kicking out of the south... but that's up to mother nature.![]()
