Now that deer season is just about over, I am now starting to think about fishing. I mostly just fish sacs in the springtime, I have 3 small boys so it's hard to get on the water every weekend with all the running around we have to do, the whole family likes to fish. I like to fish areas around Opelousas, like 2 o'clock bayou, big alabama and grimmet canal. Was hoping I could get some pointers on how to fish these areas or any area in February-March. I like to fish with a 9 foot jig pole and jigs, but just not used to fishing at this time of year. Thanks in advance.

RETIRED LOUISIANA CRAPPIE HUNTER
Funny, I only catch sac-a-lait in Henderson. I think crappie are caught farther north. LOL
Seriously, Mstell2, welcome to the forum. There are lots of good, helpful people here.
Because it is shallow, the fishing in two o'clock is better in the spring, during the spawn.
In big alabama fishing is good now. The gauge should be below 17' and falling or steady. It is 17' and steady now.
Good luck.
I used fish those same areas when I lived down there.
The grimmet canal was hot in the spring but the best
fish were in Fordoche Bayou. Go the back of the canal
and go through the woods till you come to bayou. It
has been a long time since I was here but caught a
lot of bream in 2o'clock.
Cajun, how deep would you recommend fishing big alabama, do I fish logs or what types of structure should I be on the lookout for? Do jigs work when it's cold or, minnows are best? Thanks.
If you fish the South landing (Bayou Manuel Rd. off 975) there is good fishing near the landing. No need to crank the motor, just troll North and fish the treetops along both banks in about 4-6 ft. of water. I generally do best on the West bank. I like jigs but shiners will do as good. I rarely fish the north landing (it is much closer to you) so I can't be of much help there.
Thanks Cajun, I like to go on south landing so, I have an idea of what u r talking about.
I did really well in 2 oclock and big alabama last year in the middle of February fishing right up on the banks. About 6-8 inches deep. Im thinking the spawn well be a little later this year because of the cold weather we are having.
