We run yo yo's all the time in the river lakes this time of year and always put the shiner about 3" below the surface. I think that is a nighttime thing, not a spawning issue. I think WP will come up shallow any time of the year it's just the warmer water I where they lay eggs which is closest to the surface. Maybe it has something to do with incubating the eggs. What do I know anyways, I'm just a gewber!!!! Lol

The biggest crappie (Im talkin gooduns) Ive seen during this time were either on the bottom in channel 13-15 fow or hanging in the dark on a yoyo!

Have pretty good luck on black lake for the most part not a alot of big numbers but always good fish
One thing I have learned about fishing "up north" is that I would rather be there pre spawn .. But what I've learned over the many years, is that the spawn comes in waves.. There always seems to be a major, which may be based on water temps and moon phase.. The low temps at night seem to affect it more than the high temps during the day..when the night temps stay in the 50s and the day temps are in the 70s, that seems to be the best scenario..
