Always learning something. Almost always fish 1/8 oz jigs in deeper brush. Didn't work yesterday so pulled the only other thing I had in my box to play. 1/64 with tiny hook.
It worked very well but I have no idea how to fish something that small. They would only hit it on a dead fall so I tried paying attention to the line rather than relying on feel. I caught a bunch of fish but missed three times as many thinking the jig was still falling when it was actually in the fishes mouth n running and I was slow on the draw.
Thinking I'll actually tie up some 1/32s with #4s and see if my hook ratio will increase a bigger hook just hoping that extra weight won't accelerate the rate of fall that much. It took FOREVER for that little thing to sink! But it never got hung up either.
Teach me! Please.

Adam, glad to see you're still figuring them out. Are you using sickle hooks, they seem to hang up in the fish's mouth better than regular hooks when it tries to spit it out. I have some 1/64 jigs on # 4 sickle which I tie very sparsely, small body and very thin tail for such occasions.

I was schooled back in late spring/early summer. All I've been pulling were 1/16ths when longlining and two guys caught 2 to my every 1 and they were pulling 1/32nds. I wasnt putting as much line out the back of the boat thinking I was pulling about the same depths but I guess they just wanted a smaller bait. Needless to say I now carry more than just 1/16th jigheads now. Sometimes you just have to change up and see what they want. Congrats on the catch.

Thanks fellas. Mr Gene, all the jigs I tie have sickles but this was just one of those you throw in your box that you're "never gonna use" that was store bought. Mustn't had a #8 hook on it!
Now that I think about if I wouldve just taken the time and figured out the depth of the water I was fishing over there wouldve been less guessing. Or slipped on a sliding cork. But I was paddling and guess I thought I was working enough doing that. Coulda shoulda woulda.

I agree with Gator on the buggers. I would take some 1/32 and put a good heavy palmer collar on them. It will definitely slow the fall down a good bit. If worried about getting hung up go with a #6 sickle.

NEVER EVEN THOUGHT OF THE BUGGER. Think I have some saddle that's long enough. I know I surely won't be finding any for sale.
