Only one person has mentioned Cave Run. It is only an hour from Lexington and some years the Crappie fishing can be pretty good. Try the upper end of Beaver Creek. The Blackwater area in the upper lake can also be productive. Both of these areas are full of stumps and should be navigated with great caution.

Someone mentioned Cedar Creek gets crowded. I didn't know what a "crowded lake" could look like until we went there on the first nice weekend last spring. The lake has excellent facilities in terms of ramps and parking lots, but you better get there early on a Sat or Sun. Despite having 100's of parking spaces, there was no parking available after 9:30. Hundreds of cars in the parking lot means hundreds of boats on the lake.
Cedar Creek does get very crowded, I try to get there by 5 a.m. if not a little earlier. I got there once at 10 a.m. and just turned around and headed toward Herrington as there was not a parking space to be had. On those crowded days one better be prepared to get washed up on the bank or off their spot because it seems like the boats do nothing but run up and down this little impoundment. It really makes no sense to me because the lake only has about 780 acres and one can idle just about anyplace on the lake in a matter of a few minutes. Some people just have to run and gun all day; it makes no sense, but to each his own. That's another story I suppose.
thanks for the heads up michael.....i could tell from just the few times i duck hunted out there this year that there will be plenty of fishing traffic there....hopefully some weekdays will free up for me....

Just be sure that people know that these drive times are based on driving from the East end of Lexington :p .... mapquesting from their home to these lakes is advised, to get a more accurate mileage/time scale. I had a blast at cedar creek last year. I bet i took 600 or more crappie over the course of the year out of that lake. But they are right about them being small. Hopefully by thinning some of them out they will get a chance to grow bigger. Herrington lake does have some nice crappie IF you can find them! I've fished herrington many times and can't seem to find many fish. Im up for suggestions and fishing trips though if anyone is able!

I live in Lexington and will be going to Cedar Creek a lot in the spring. I caught a bunch there last spring and would be glad to take you some Friday or Sat. and show you a few spots I have learned. Haven't fished many of the other lakes yet but plan to this spring. Let me know if you'd like to go.
