I went down on Nov 29 and the water was 45 to 47 degrees. I hear that the water is down to 40 to 42 degrees with ice starting to form in the back of some of the branches. I was fishing for crappie with minnows. I only managed 1 crappie which was a decent 9". I did manage to boat 9 bass with a couple of them being 17" and the smallest being 12". I was using my 6' Shimano Clarus ultra light rod. The bite was very, very light; watching the line was a must. I caught my fish in 17-20 feet of water fishing about 10-12 feet deep. I was fishing very close to timber. I fished from about noon to 4:30 and the air temp was around 40 to 42 and it was a windy day which made to a cold time on the water. I know that this report is about 2 weeks old but I hope it helps some. I am planning on heading down this Sat and/or Sun if the long range forecast holds true(I got my fingers crossed). I will again fish with minnows and think I will try to locate some of the stumps and brush piles in the main part of the lake and fish a foot or to above them. If that doesn't work I will try some structure in some shallower water. Just figure that I will start deep and move shallower. I am not real experienced with wintertime fishing, so I figure there is no better way to learn than to hit the water and give it a try. Anybody else got any wintertime tips? I have had no luck with jigs at CC other than during the springtime. Good Luck, keep warm and stay safe.

The long range forcast is still looking great for this weekend, but we all know that the weather can change in a heartbeat. Just need to hit the water cause it's a long time til spring. I have been thinking that I might try to put 2 or 3 rods in my rod holders and maybe slow troll over the stumps in the channels on the main section of the lake. I have only fished like that a few times in the spring and fall and I am not very confident that it will be a good way to fish in the wintertime. I am thinking that the bite is way too light. I am starting to sway back to fishing the way I was a couple of weeks ago. Any thoughts anyone? Hope everyone gets a chance to go fishing this weekend because warmer temps are going to be few and far between til spring.

Those are nice rods -- very underestimated, IMO.

Default Went to Cedar Creek on 1-3-2009

The weather was kind of warm for the 3rd day of January, so I decided to give CC a shot. I fished for crappie with minnows again. I did not have too much luck. I only had a couple of hits; they may have been bass, but who knows. I saw several people crappie fishing and the few that I spoke to were not having too much luck either. The water temp was 42 to 44 degrees. The wind was blowing as usual for CC and that made the air temp feel much colder than it was. The water was pretty clear from the old 150 boat ramp to the dam and it was very stained in the upper part of the lake. I got my hits when I was fishing about 8 to 10 feet deep. Surely someone else had better luck for crappie than I did. I counted 15 trailers at the old 150 boat ramp; maybe someone out there can give me some tips on catching these wintertime crappie. I really enjoy fishing and do not get easily discouraged; I will get it figured out in time because I try to learn something new each time I go out. I enjoy fishing whether I am catching or not, but catching is alot more fun. I fished from 11:30 until 4:30. Next decent day we have, I will give it another shot.
