    Thumbs up Barkley 12-2-08

I fished Barkley yesterday 12-2 & had 15 keeper crappie. They were all about 9' deep on a "floatntiny" also caught about a 5 1/2 or 6 lb LM on a 9' crappie rod. What a fight!!! Did not see another boat on the water all day.

Thinking about going to Barkley and Kentucky next weekend. What part of the lake were you fishing? Were the fish in the bays or in the main lake?

Default Shallow Water Crappie on Barkley

This may be hard to believe with all the cold weather we have been having but try fishing shallow. The last two weeks we have been catching slabs in only 4-7 feet of water back in the creeks off the main channel. Fishing a small bobber set 2.5' deep with 1/16 oz. or 1/32 oz. jig head and chartreuse pearl tube tipped with Power Bait nibble. Look for mud banks with any laydowns. Alot of fish came off what appeared to be also clean banks. The secret is to find the pods of small 1-2" shad-the Crappie are there too. Swim the jig slowly a foot at a time and stop. Most strikes occur as the jig is falling. Saturday air temp was 22 degrees in AM and with ice in the guides until about 11.ooam.

    Hey Gup,

Fishing out of Dover, Tn. This may be hard to believe but water temps were near 60 degrees in the main channel and 55 in the creeks. This past week the rain and runoff made the river muddy and running with temps 48-49. Back in the creeks the temps were 44-46. Talked to an older local that told me he catches crappie all winter shallow. Go figure. If your planning a trip down let me know, maybe we can hook up and wet a line. I am usually available on Sat.-Sun.-during the week hard to get away. Can reach me at [email protected]. Dover is about a 50 minute drive south of Murray where I live. I was catching fish shallow as well on the main river channel until it muddied up and the current increased. Let's hope this cold weather moves on.

    Regards,
    SWV "FishMan"
