Huck:
Many years ago I watched a tv show with some guys fishing below kentucky dam in February for sauger. They were using a jig tipped with a minnow with a small treble in the tail of the minnow. The last time I was below the dam a guy that was fising off the bank said the sauger had moved up there that year and had stayed.
I caught several of them around turkey bay on the lake itself. Was using a tiny tiger striped crank bait. I kept getting short strikes that I thought were trash fish. I was fishing with John Gardner who knew exactly what was hitting. He said to stop the bait and maybe the sauger would take it. He was exactly right. I boated about six that way.
Maybe that will help on your next trip. Oh I forgot the guys below the dam were fishing vertical below the boat.
Good info Pete, Thanks!
