Aquatic plants info

Hi Gang,

It's been slow on the KY board lately. Not much fishing action?

My local lake is getting choked with aquatic plants, and I would like to learn more about them, including their names and how they effect the fish. Anybody know any good sources of info on that?

I found one site run by Univ of FL, but it was too much info--there were hundreds of plant names listed--not too useful if you don't know what you're looking at to begin with.

What are the common types of aquatic plants that we have in the lakes in central KY? (I live near Lex.) An old-timer told me that last year's drought and low water made it easier for weeds to get established in the lakes--any thoughts on that? And how does it effect the fishing? Do crappie like the weeds, or are they holding in deeper places without weeds? Any effect on other panfish or bass?

Your Ky Dept Fish and Wildlife District Fishery Biologist can help you ID the plants and give me info on them. Call Frankfort 800 858 1549 during week days 8 to 4. Tell them the county you live in and ask for phone number for your district biologist.
