    Default Okeechobee Lake

Hi! I winter in the town of Okeechobee and the lake fishing for crappies is not to good. The lake is way down. Just can not get out there to fish. If you had a air boat you could. Had to fish the river and some canels.
Here is a site to check the lake level.

Did get some real nice crappies in the river. The guys going out at night and fishing with lights did harvest a lot of fish on the river. To me that is not fishing.

Thanks for all the info. I always heard good things but sounds like they might be one the downward swing right now. Hopefully it will pick up and they will get some more water.

Welcome to the boards Swanie and thanks for the link to the Okeechobie watershed site. I have stashed it in my favorites for future dreaming. I definitely want to make it there before I die and do some nighttime fishing for crappie, there is nothing like it in the world. I'd also like to lay into some bass with that shiner fishing they do down there. Until then, I'll have to satisfy myself with dreamin'.:D

i agree with you on the night fishing, it's not for me. tried it before, you really have to be set up for it. i know they catch more fish this way, i'll stick to daylight hours.

I live about 80 miles north of Okeechobee, in St. Cloud. I fish the Florida Crappie Association tournys and have several friends who live down there on the lake. The water is really low there but don't believe everyone when they say there isn't good fish there. I will agree that the river and Fish Eating Creek are the best spots. I prefer the Kissimmee Chain and the Harris Chain. It has been near 90 degrees here and I have stiil been pounding good fish. Here is a link to my post about Sat. trip.http://www.crappie.com/gr8vb3/showthread.php?t=69808 You will rarely see those 3lbers here but, man we got some great crappie fishing 12 months out of the year. Drop me a post if you need a guided trip any time of the year.
