As with the previous mentioned post, I would not make a special trip to Malone if I were planning on fishing Kentucky or Barkley. Malone is just under 800 acres it only has two ramps to launch your boat. The state dock does rent small jon boats. The other ramp is privately owned and charges a fee to launch. The lake is very scenic with numerous high bluff walls. It is not know for superb crappie fishing. There is no size limit on crappie if that tells you anything. The bass fishing is good....there have been several bass over 9lbs taken from the lake, (my personal best is just a 5lb 12oz.) Bluegill fishing is really good, especially the first two weeks of may. The lake recieves a lot of pressure.....Every Tuesday night they have a bass tournament with 30 to 40 boats which on an 800 acre lake makes space limited.
If you have plenty of time and like to explore new water then I would suggest it. The lake is located in Logan and Muhlenberg county. Coming south from Lousiville I would exit onto the Western Ky parkway at Elizabethtown. Near the city of Greenville and Central City, (home of the Everly Brothers) you'll see a sign for Lake Malone. The Lake Malone Inn, used to be open and provided lodging, however, I've heard it's been closed down. Shady Cliff has a good restaurant and rooms. Hope this helps you out. Good Luck!
Thanks badbrad. I was at kentucky lake a couple weeks ago. I had a great trip. I heard that malone had a good redear population along with some really nice bluegills. I wanted to stop and spend a day or two there on my next trip down to ky lake in mid-may. I have 2 weeks vacation. I'm going after shellcrackers at ky lake too. Can you give me any info on malone as to where i can find the gills and shellcrackers? Again, thanks for the info.
I'm with Greenfish....If I were fishing Kentucky or Barkley I would not leave them for Lake Malone. Malone is around 800 acres...they do rent boats at the State Dock (small Jons) I have fished Malone for several years and usually go once a week beginning in May. The bluegill and bass fishing is very good...crappie is fair. There is no size limit on crappie on Malone if that tells you anything. It is a very pretty lake, surrounding mostly by woods and bluff walls. It recently has had several homes developed along the shoreline. The lake has two ramps, the State dock and Shady Cliff. Shady Cliff has a good restaurant and lodging. If you come down I-65 from Louisville you would need to get on the Western Kentucky Parkway at Elizabethtown. Take the parkway to the Greenville/Central City exit there will be a sign for Lake Malone on US 431 south. Good Luck and Good fishing.
thanks for the info everyone I just got back from a 2 week stretch in russellville and fished lake malone 3 or 4 times with little luck, the first day i went up there i got 13 nice crappies and a few gills in a couple of hours. I went back up a couple of days later and only caught 2 crappies and a huge catfish. I found the lake at the boyscout camp and was wondering if it was worth the money to buy a permit it is alot closer than lake malone for an evening trip. anymore info would help.
