    Default Wood Creek Lake 4/30

My cousin and I went out yesterday, 4/30/08 about 5 PM to Wood Creek Lake in London, Kentucky hoping to get some action. We found some good structure & was using minnows at first. We caught one fish from here and it was a bluegill. We moved on to another spot & was shot down there too. Finally, we ended up in a tree top & caught a few on jigs & minnows, after a relaxing evening (would have liked to had more fish), we gave it up.

We caught about 10-20 crappie, but there were all below the limit. We ended up with one keeper, right at 9 inches, 1 very nice bluegill (belly was full of eggs), and a little R&R.

I have fished Wood Creek for years, I have never come off the water with a full load of crappie. I don't know what the water temp. was, but it was up a bit.

We tried the channels, banks, tree tops, you name it. But just couldn't get into any size.

Anyone fish Wood Creek much? Got any tips or pointers? We were just there at a bad time? I don't think the spawn is over, we caught alot near the banks & the tree tops, the one keeper came from about 5 feet of water, fishing about 3 1/2 feet down with a floater & minnow.

Alot of people say they catch alot of crappie there, but I just don't have any luck.

    Thanks!

We love Wood Creek, it's a really pretty lake. I think it is the jewel of the I-75 corridor, although I wish they had a campground there.

We have never had much luck there, either. We don't fish it regularly, so I always blame our bad luck on not knowing the key places and patterns. One thing is that I think it is harder to fish clear water than stained or murky. I don't really bother with changing down to 4# line or having 20 different colored jigs standing by, but I think when the water is clear, it's more challenging, and you have to be ready to make changes like that. Of course, if you're not where the fish are, it doesn't matter what you're doing.

I do not know what is up with spawn this year. It seems like it hasn't yet started and is nearly over at the same time. The two lakes I fish regularly seem dead. The bass are active, but the crappie are AWOL.

Good luck and I hope some people can weigh in with some helpful info.

Thanks for the info, Wood Creek is a very beautiful place, we have a home there, so it's easy access, part of the lake was clear but the other part was murky. I'm with you, I think the spawn is off & I'm affraid as I did last year, I'll end up missing what little there is.

As for places to fish there, depends on what you are fishing for, deepest water is toward the dam, & there is some good fish in there area, but there are good fish just about anywhere if you can get in them.

    Harley,
Why don't you try some 2lb test line with some real small popeyes tipped with a crappie nibble or waxworm. I bet you will have a good time in a clear water lake like Woods.

Thanks, I'll try that when the weather breaks in a day or two. :D
