    Thumbs up Herrington Report....4.2.08

My buddy Edwin and I hit the water around 5:45 today after I got off work. The lake had real good color to it but was still very high from all the rains we have had. Water temp at launch was 55*, wind from the NNE around 10-15mph. We found some crappie in 25' of water holding to tight cover. Caught a few off an old cedar tree and the action slowed down. We went to find another spot and, while we were at idle speed in a no wake zone, being the addict I am I threw my jig out of the back of the boat, in about 50 yards, bam a real nice white bass(pushing 3lbs). We thought hmmm..tried it again and bam another. We eased our way up a point out of the wind and the water was popping with action. We started casting and for over an hour and a half it was non stop action. I have never had so many HUGH white bass in such a short period. I am not kidding when I say we only had a couple under 2lbs, most were 2 1/2-some honest 4lb fish. We had a limit in no time. We also had a few hybrid bass to take our jigs.....landed 2 or 3 of them while we were at it! Man do those hybrids make for fun on a ML 7' rod and 6# test. Talk about drag pulling fun. We fished to DARK and we both were wishing for more light. What an evening, I fish more than I should and today was one of those times that you don't get often enough. I am afraid this 2-4" of rain that is on the way is going to screw it up but we can't control the weather. Water temp when we loaded up for home was 52*. Edwin took the fish home with him so no pictures but I am sure they will all be released to the grease.

    Default White Bass

The wife and I were driving past Herrington last weekend and I was telling her about the white bass runs of old. I told her we should give it a try even though we never hear about the run anymore. It was in the late 60's last time I fished the run. It sounds like it is still happening and I wish I had been there with you, you all hit it right that afternoon, congratulations. Were you all up in the Dix or on the main lake, if you don't mind me asking? We used to troll yellow Heddon flatfish up into the dix river from the lake and fill the boat.

We were in the lake. We thought about going up in the river but it is closer for us to just fish the lake. We are always pressed for time when we go after work. Your welcome to come fish Herrington with me sometime. Just shoot me a PM and we will work it out. Crappiepappy is coming down sometime later this month.

Glad to hear that you had a fun time with the white bass. They can be a blast!

I'm new to the area, just moved from TX. We used to get good runs, but they were really spotty: if you could find fish one day, you almost certainly couldn't find them again in the same spot the next day. Is that the same situation here in KY? Is the best technique for whites/hybrids is just to push up river until you find them? I know you said you caught them in the lake, but is that normal for Dix/Herrington?
