I was just wandering if anyone had any info on obtaining a permit to fish Sympson Lake? Drove down last summer just to look at the lake, and liked what I saw. Looked like alot of shallow structure, with some good drop offs. I have heard alot about this being a pretty good bass lake, anybody know about the panfish? Thanks for your help.

The lake in Nelson County???
Buy your permits at Bardstown City Hall next to the police station. Price depends on boat size and motor. Cannot exceed 200 hp. I fish there often and have for about five years. Bass and catfish are good size and numbers but panfish are terrible. Not many crappie over 8 inches and are thin. Bluegill very small. My biggest gripe is the lake is extremely shallow near the dock and around July or August the lake dries up on the docking end to where you can no longer put in a decent boat. Poor parking. I have a backup 12 ft jon I slide out of the truck when the lake goes down. You not only need the city permit but also a KY fishing license. Game Warden stops in often and a retired city policeman patrols with a boat. Good luck.

Thanks for the info, I saw what you mean about the parking, everybody was parked on the side of the road. I have heard alot of good bass tales about the lake, sounds like its worth a try.
It's worth a try. I've seen some good bass come outta there. They have a couple of water tiles that they fill with that hold some big hogs nearby. I guess it's because it stirs the oxygen.

Everything Wichita said is exactly right. Most of the shallow cover is on the upper end of the lake by the ramp. I fished there for crappie in late December and caught a ton of fish but they were very thin and biggest fish of the day was 11.5". Possibility of very large bass though from what I hear. Good luck.
Take care,

Just MHO, but ... if you're going to drive about an hour to get to Sympson Lake, you really might want to consider going to Taylorsville Lake. Drive time is about the same, lake is much larger, Crappie are bigger, no permit needed (just non-res license), and you have a better chance of hooking up with some board members (or just getting better info)Originally Posted by Locator79

Crappiepappy you nailed it! I live in between both, 8 minutes to Sympson, 20 to Taylorsville, I would rather fish Taylorsville but when I want a quick local fix I hit Sympson, Pappy I see you post on here alot and would like to fish with ya sometime. I respect your knowledge. My partner suffered congestive heart failure and now is on the kidney machine at home 8 hrs at a time. In case he can't make the spawn let's hit it a time or two. I got the boat, gas, bologna and a few honey holes if ya got the time.

when I find out what my work schedule is going to be, for that timeframe. It's subject to being changed, but I won't know for another month +/-Originally Posted by Wichita
