i fish the ky river, at times it can produce some nice fish, for me its harder to pattern fish than in a lake, but it runs next to my house so i find myself fishing it alot. but i still like the lakes a little better.

Norm ...
I've never fished the Ohio River ... but, I have fished the KY River off and on since I was a teenager :p (Valley View - Clays Ferry - High Bridge)
Best Crappie fishing I've done, on the KY River, has been around concrete bridge pilons (Clays Ferry Bridge), when there's been some brush washed up and hung up on the concrete pilons. I've also done good in flooded shoreline trees (live ones) when the river was up but not flowing heavy.
Friend of mine lives on the KY River ... catches Crappie from there, too (though he is a Bass angler at heart). His method is to anchor upflow from a downed tree, and float a minner/bobber right up next to the tree. Alternative to that, is to anchor downflow and use longpoles to reach the trees.
Eddy currents caused by downed trees, and the eddies of the inside of river bends, are where you're most likely to find Crappie ... if there's much flow to the river. Wood cover is almost absolutely necessary

I have caught crappie from the Ohio River while fishing for sauger.
Funny thing is, I found a tree where I could catch sauger from using
regular size minnows, but when I switched to large shiners I started
catching crappie.
Weird, those crappie wouldn't hit a minnow, but a large shiner.(???)
