I am heading down tonite after work ( thursday) and I have several of my friends comming down to fish for the weekend,,, Im new at ky lake ( 1.5 yrs) and I know that the cold have probably moved the crappie deeper,,I do have some shallow spots we have been fishing 3 weeks ago but my question is locating the deeper fish,,, Im 1 cove noth of shawnee bay resort,, and looking for help in locating deeper places to fish this weekend,, do you think trolling the mouths of bays might work, say from shawnee bay up to the moores? if so what would you use? heavier jigs, road runners, or minnows? any suggestions would help,, I have had the trip planned for months and would like my friends to catch a few, thanks

I Think You Are Right To Look Deeper. I just got home and haven't had a chance to go yet but I've been gathering info, studying and planning. I don't know the area that you're fish'n but I'm gonna start out trying the deepest water I can find back in the bays not out towards the mouth. I'm gonna "back track" these suckers till I find'm! Even with the harsh cold weather I just don't think the fish have move way out. I believe they are gonna move just far enough to get comfortable and the slow rise of the lake will keep them in the bays. Plus the wind and rain has stained the water a little. That should help the water soak up the sun better. I'm gonna vertical jig and downsize my presentation and stick and move! Now I want to qualify this by saying; I have been wrong before! :D

What tactics did you use? Jigs, Minnows? Were they suspended over the deep water or down that deep?Originally Posted by chaunc

They were down deep. One foot off bottom for the big girls. Used minnows, drifted and slow trolled over the brush. Threw an eighth oz jig and tube too. 15 count over the deep brush. Tried 8 diffrent color jig bodies until i found the one they'd hit. Red/chartreuse was the ticket. Wish the wind would have let up on wednesday and thursday. Couldn't fish my spots those days.
I was down last week also. We also found our fish on deeper brush piles. We didn't do as go as Chaunc and our better jig color was red/chart also. I don't think we were fishing as deep but had consistent sucess in 10-15 fow on points and in brush. We found some bait balls in 15-20 fow with fish hanging around them but couldn't get any takers. Wind did make it tough to get at them a few days.
Your plan is sound just look deeper and they definitley are in the bays.
wow!!! what a nice bunch of fish,, we fished friday, got a few white bass,no crappie,, tried 15ft,, near points,,nothing,, fished saturday,, 1 crappie,, in 18ft a bit farther in from the points,,but the wind, rain ( sleet early) it was sad,, but the wives did manage to catch quite a few at the shops at grand rivers,,,,,,,,
I do have a serious question,, if the whites havent spawned yet, is it too late? will the eggs just dry up and no spawn? did the blacks complet their spawn? or just about half of them??? how will this affect fishing for the rest of the year and how will it affect fishing next few years,,
I went yesterday johnny and manage 19 good, and I mean good fish! They were mostly Whites with 2 big Black Females mixed in. All of the fish I caught were in 12' to 15' of water about 8' to 10' deep. Couldn't catch but 1 keeper after 1 pm. Only thing I could get them to hit was a 3/32 chartruse head with a purple & chartruse tube. The guy that wrote the artical in the Paducah sun about there not being any small crappie for the coming years needs to go fish'n with me! I bet I caught 50 that were 6" to 9 1/2" fish. I could have caught more but that's not my thing. I'm after the big'ns. I believe that the next week to two weeks will tell the tail. I believe the Whites will move up quickly as the water warms. Certainly this year's spawn hasn't been Ideal but I look at it this way; for every real bad day that limits the fishermen it is a positive for the fish. Lord knows we had some bad days for the fishermen. I have noticed one thing this year and ally my fish'n buddies are saying the same thing. Last year we caught mostly Black Crappie. This year I have caught mostly Whites. I think with the early warming water temps that the Blacks slipped by me this year. Good news for them! :DOriginally Posted by johnnybub
