    Default Braided Line?

After reading and talking to some I've ordered a spool of braid to try for trolling, jigging, spider rigging. Sensitivity, without a doubt, is a good reason but I keep hearing about slack with mono. Yes, no? I may be selling the balance of the spool in the classified. Yesterday on Nolin I felt the thump with a jig but couldn't hook them. When I tried a minnow I could set the hook. Not sure the braid would've made a difference but gotta try.

"but I keep hearing about slack with mono." ... you wanna explain that a little more ?? Or did you actually mean "stretch", rather than "slack" ??

The article did slack. It was talking about loosing fish while pulling crank baits. Some days you loose more than your able to boat. It just doesn't make sense I know but want to see if it will make a difference.

I've tried shooting docks, I suck at it.

Oh, OK ... but, yeah, you're right, it don't make much sense to me either. Unless maybe it was talking about "pulling" cranks without any trolling weights ahead of them.

If you intend to use braid only ... straight to the bait ... I suggest you loosen the drags on your trolling reels !! At least to the point where the drag will slip before the rod is loaded up to it's max. Even 10lb test braid will put a kink in a long rod, so you KNOW what 30lb test braid can do. (talking about trolling with jigs/cranks here)

When casting with braid, I've only used it on a 7' med Bionic Blade spinning rod ... and when casting a jig with it (tied direct to jig) I found out that adding a #5 splitshot about 12" above the jig made even the smallest tap feel like a serious "thump". The only other time I used that outfit to cast with, was when using Road Runner or Whirly Bee lures ... and hooksets were nothing more than sweeping the rod away about a foot, while continuing to reel in. No need for a rod jerk type of hookset.

And get a pair of Fiskar Scissors (couple of $$ at WallyMart) to cut the braid with. It makes a nice clean, blunt tag end cut, which makes it much easier to poke that limp braid through jig/crank/snap/swivel eyes. A small piece of wood or wood dowel to wrap the braid around, to pull a snagged bait free, is also a good idea. You DO NOT want to try and pull a snagged bait free with your bare hands It will slice you open like a razor blade (personal experience speaking here)

Good points pappy. I plan on using a mono leader with a swivel in most cases. Thanks for the Fiskar tip.

I have an old 5' 6" graphite rod I bought at Gander Mountain years ago. I wouldn't take any amount of money for it. It's sensitive and casts easily. I think the perfect rod is just the one you love.
