If my trolling motor shaft is not long enough and is running squirrelly when I'm in the back of the boat, could this be part of my problem?
When going into any decent wind, it's set on at least 6 or 7 setting, and that is early on. Progressively gets worse with heavy winds and fishing time.

These are all good responses. However, on kentucky lake we deal with a larger mass of water, greater depth of water, and stronger current than a lot of coe lakes in the nation. Sometimes due to immense flooding we even have very strong negative current. This negative current being meet with high winds pushing against contrasting current can really take a toll on batteries. In addition we contend with larger than average of pleasure boaters, multiple larger ships, and constant barge traffic. All these conditions on windy days will, not if, drain any battery.
I started with group 27's against the advise of an experienced ky lake troller, who suggested utilizing group 31's. Soon I went to 29's and then to 31's. From common 31's to Trojans. The end result after several years produced two banks of Trojan 31's that can be switched over between the two when needed. This auxiliary bank isn't often needed but when needed it is nice to have. I hate pulling off fish that are biting due to drained batteries. In closing, I'm not challenging the above comments but sharing factual experience gained from this beautiful lake that I love. Brian, having a longer shaft will reduce porpoising. Also having the trolling motor head running at an upward angle due to additional weighted transom will prevent maximum thrust at mph/per setting on trolling motor setting speed. I placed an additional hundred pounds of weight up front and sit in the middle which balances my boat level which allows me to obtain and maintain maximum thrust at set mph/speed setting which increasing battery life. This isn't noticeable pulling jigs at slower speeds but pulling cranks it is an does impact battery life minutes under load will trolling.
On the swinging from side to side there are two things that will reduce that. First, while fighting fish, or any other sustained movement, try to stay centered in the boat. Second, for those with a remote trolling motor that can be operated both by remote control and wired foot control, have the foot control by you. As you are trolling or reeling in a fish, or tangled lines, you can use the foot control while your hands are busy to make adjustments thus keeping the boat tracking straight in conjunction with the auto pilot being utilized. I've got 29's with a 60" shaft on the Terrova. I can troll for 7 hours straight with no wind/current issues. That time drops precipitously if TVA is pulling hard and there's a good breeze. I have enough vertical clearance for the 1275s listed above and that's what I'm moving to when its replacement time.
If I have someone with me we'll sit on the edge of the front deck and face aft to keep the bow of the boat from rising and catching wind. I keep my TM lowered nearly all the way down to get as big of a bite of water as it can. The way I check boat balance is that I have my rod tips set to be about 12" off the water on each side so a quick look lets me know if I need to scoot over or move a cooler to redistribute weight. I moved my anchors and fire extinguisher up front and fill my front livewell to keep the front of the boat low in the water. Something else I've move to is using the belt clip on the terrova remote vs the lanyard. It's easier or me to get to when fighting fish and moving around the boat.
Sounds like you have a tin boat Dutch, there is a big difference between the two.
I'm checking a few things as to what I can do. Battery clearance has been confirmed already.

Note the Trojan height (11h) is to the top of the battery post ...and one wouldn't want any possibility of shorting the battery posts...Quote:

Sounds like you may need to go to a 36 volt / 112# thrust possibly. My 24 volt 80# will push my 1652 tin boat into the wind for about 6-7 hours. It's a lot lighter boat than yours, I'm sure. Course you probably already considered this, just throwing it out there.Quote:

I have 3 1275 trojans. Has a special tray made and I installed it forward where a storage compartment was. I have a 31 series for starting and a 27 for my fish finders. Really enjoy the Trojans don't worry about trolling time. Attachment 268791
