Here it is, opening day of KY deer rifle season, ground zero for a taxidermist. I hung up my deer hunting gear this year to concentrate on the crappie guiding. Got to the shop early to do some housework that has been sorely needed for some time. As I was cleaning up, I kept getting a whiff of something rotten in Denmark. It seemed to be confined to an area close to my sinks where we cleaned all the shindig fruit jar tourney catch. I checked everything and couldn't locate the source.
I worked almost 30 years in chemical plants and bad smells were something that was part of our daily lives. I have prided myself in keeping smells in my taxidermy shop to a minimum. I know eliminating smells where blood and guts are part of the deal is wishful thinking but I try.
Anyway, I was moving items near the sinks to make room around my hoist for deer I know are soon to come. I had placed the aluminum pans from the fish cooking at the shindig as well as my fish coating shaker box on a small table so I went to move them.... HOLY CRAP BATMAN!!! WHAT IS THAT SMELL? Seems I had coated the last batch of crappie to be cooked but failed to release them to the grease. They were still in my coating box from a week ago!! The smell has been located. The coating box has found its new home in the garbage and now the place smells like Febreeze.
It's always something around my place.

Well at least Phonenix didn't find'em first!
That had to be one awful smell.
Holy Crappie Batman! Is that the Penquins lunch I smell?![]()
And you blamed Camo for hiding a piece of deer meat.

Camo decided to take his bi-yearly stroll outside tonight and scared the crap out of me until I could finally persuade him he was a lot better off back inside. He did that a few years ago and was gone for over a week. I was convinced he was coyote droppings since he has never been around anything but the labs and has no front claws. Finally caught him one night in a live cage trap baited with his cat food. Guess he just had to see the world from outside the walls even though it was dark when he made his escape. Took a couple years off me!
