They are done. Tried some last week and no fish. Been catching a few crappie and catfish.

There is a nice public ramp in the back of Sledd off Ridge Road. Not hearing anything from gills or redears.

Several reports floating around on the net said the bluegill and shellcracker were biting surprisingly well all of last week. I have no idea what that means for today or the coming week but there's several of those positive reports out there. They also said the spawn is just about over with...makes me sad.

Big crackers can be had throughout the summer if you know how to target them and what time of day...morning and late evening in fairly deep water works pretty well. You may not catch but a dozen or so but with the size structure it doesn't take to many to have a good mess.

Bluegill and Redear are still bedding on Lake Barkley. I caught 75 nice bluegill off beds on Friday afternoon, then guided for two folks yesterday (Sunday) afternoon for about 4 hours. They caught over 100 bluegill with many of them being the best size I've seen this spring....(I'm talking approaching Reelfoot Lake quality.) They also caught 9 nice redear mixed in with the bluegill, and two really nice catfish. All the fish were caught on Grizzly jigs. BTW, just for information, we didn't keep a single fish. We were just fishing for the fun of it.

Hmm,I have never caught the size and quality of Gills at Reelfoot I have on Ky/Barkley. I hear a lot of folks say Reelfoot is way better but my freezer is full of big Ky Lake gills and Redear. I must be doing something wrong at Reelfoot. Gills should move up again (unless I am misinformed) and spawn around full moon if nothing weatherwise kills it. Won't be like May and June but better than nothing...

Thanks everyone for your input, I hope I can come down before the weekend to try and catch some gills. Fishing around sled creek ramp bays is the only place I know where to fish for gills.. Thanks again for your help.

Killum, I guess you must have been doing something wrong at Reelfoot. Having fished all three lakes (Reelfoot, Barkley, and Kentucky) all my life, I have to say that the average size of Reelfoot Lake bluegill has historically always been better than Ky or Barkley. Probably still is even though I'll admit that in the last few years bluegill fishing on both of the big lakes has really improved.
