I'd like to know what kind of bass boat they were in. Since the motor was supposedly ripped off by waves and the transom torn out, I want to be sure to never consider buying that brand. Tearing the transom out after hitting a house foundation or some other bottom debris (ask Scotty Young) I can see but not from a wave.

I was fishing the GA BASS Federation state championship tourney in 1980 when one of the boats failed to show up at weigh-in. Lake Eufaula was as rough as KY Lake tends to get that day and waves 4'+ were common. The missing boaters were spotted on the bank by plane and were OK. Seems they were headed back to the weigh in in a new Hydra Sports boat and hit a wave so hard that the boat split all the way up the bottom center seam and went down like a rock. The Humminbird guys found the boat later. Transom was still there.

I keep thinking we'll hear more. Even launching off a big wave shouldn't damage the transom unless it was rotten or had damage from a previous impact. One of the stories just says the motor was ripped off the boat, which could mean a failed jack plate or motor frame.

My bet would be they were running close to shore and hit something. I almost sank my bass boat years ago in one of the Jet-A-Marina tournaments, we hit a wave and unknown to us it busted the bottom off the (one) bilge pump. I have never seen the lake as rough as it was that day. When we finally made it to the canal the water was almost boot top deep. After figuring out what happened and finding the bottom piece of the pump I laid on my stomach for almost an hour holding the pump together to pump the water out. I honestly thought we would drown that day, all I could think about was my daughter who was a toddler at the time. I made up my mind after that, NEVER again would I put myself in that position, no amount of fish or $$$ is worth a mans life.

I have messed with hot rods all of my life and have put them in some bad spots, but KY Lake is the only thing that has ever scared me, to this day I still hold a healthy respect for those two big lakes. BTW there were three boats lost that day, two sank and one, a new ranger lost power and washed up on the rocks on the LBL side and was beat to death. By the grace of God no one was injured.

As someone who grew up fishing Kentucky and Barkley, and now lives on the Alabama Gulf Coast, I love it when folks say they were out in 4'-5' waves on Kentucky or Barkley in their sparkly glitter rocket. It is good for amusement. 4s and 5s keep the 30'-40' charter operations from going out down here.
