I was talking to a friend, and he informed me that on Ky. Lake, it was illegal to consume alcohol. On most lakes in Il. it is just the same as driving a car, you just can't be over the legal limit. Does anyone know?

It's illegal to have open containers (cans/glasses/bottles) of alcoholic beverages in ANY public place in KY. KY law says that our lakes/waterways are "public places" .... so YES, in that sense it is illegal.

It's not only illegal, but it's also not a real smart idea to be consuming alcoholic beverages in this heat ... especially when operating a vehicle (boat).

Here's a quote from the Coast Guard Auxiliary website, in reference to alcohol & boating :

"Just as in driving a car, alcohol use while boating can lead to impairment of critical senses needed to avoid boating accidents. Slowed reaction time and diminished decision making ability can make your day on the water a less than enjoyable one. Additionally, alcohol can cause dehydration and illness when you are exposed to a hot, sunny day of boating."

Most all the counties around KY Lake are dry option counties--no alcohol sold. I've seen officers make boaters pour their alcohol into the lake. They do keep a close eye on it. Get to the motel or campground and it's ignored, as it should be.

I know this is enforced as I've seen them escort people from the lake who've been drinking. Don't know the details as I was just getting there to put in. Pretty embarassing but glad they got them off the water. My guess is it was pretty obvious they were under the influence.

I know for a fact, that you have got to be in a tent or inside of a houseboat or cabin to legally drink. IN other words if someone can see you drink it is illegal. and how i know this is last summer i was fishing at night and he pulled up next to me at midnight. I had 3 beers with me and i was drinking a beer. He let me off but told me that it is a 200 dollar fine. and everyone in the boat can get fined even if they have beer or not. I was like you i didnt know. SO now if anybody wants to go fishing

Why are there dry counties here in Kentucky?


When I lived in Indiana, alcohol could be bought at any place in the state. WalMart sold it, so did most Gas Stations in the state.

All counties in KY have the right to choose, by vote, weather to be dry or not. Most have chosen to be "wet" mostly as an economic measure as people were buying their liqueur in other counties and /or states.

Freedom to choose I guess. The county I leave in is "damp" or "moist." Liquor and beer by the drink in liscensed restaraunts only.

Bootleggers can't make any money if all the counties are wet. Bootleggers + Bible Belt = Dry county.:D
