Default Crappie Success Friday on North KY Lake

Caught a decent bunch of crappie (19) Friday in a couple of bays near Eggner Ferry Bridge. Brush piles near the mouths of bays 15 ft deep in 16-20 FOW. Lime-colored Panfish Assassin was the bait. Every fish was excellent size; a mixture of black and white crappie. In the afternoon I switched to Bluegill. Kept 23 dandies and 6 redear.
But, one of my Crappie tournament friends gave an even better report last night to me from Big Sandy. He and two other guys caught 130 crappie in the shallows around stake beds fishing 4 ft deep in 5 to 6 feet of water. His reports are reliable; he is a first rank crappie fisherman. Many of the fish were 1 1/2 lbs. And no, they didn't keep them all; only kept a nice mess to eat. Remember, I said he was "good" fisherman, not one of those meat-hogs. By the way, their fish were caught on hot pink tube jigs tipped with crappie nibbles.

No competition!!!!! I have put up over 140 fillets this week! Fished last sat with my son, caught 25. Took the whole clan last sunday for about 5 hours and brought home 20. Took my oldest daughter tuesday evening anf caught another bunch, and then friday evening the whole family went again, and we spanked em'!!!!!
Caught mostly in 3-8 fow, and one of our tube colors backs up the previous statement about pink.
watching your little girly girls get excited when their hauling in a slab, and hollerin get the net, get the net!! Its a gooden'!!!!!! It don't get any better than that!!!!!!

Sounds like a great day on the lake, and it is great to hear that you were cautious of the number of fish you kept, I wish everyone was like that.

I fish a lot around Paris Landing State Park, and the portion of KY Lake south of Highway 68, and it has been a very tough year for most fisherman on that part of the lake. I have been catching some decent numbers of Bass, and Redear, but not very many Crappie.

Either last year or the year before, a guy who won a Crappie Tournament in that area told me that he caught 200 Crappie that day by himself, that year everyone I talked to was catching dozens of Crappie per day.

But this year it's been the total opposite, most guys were lucky to catch a few Crappie.

I sure hope things are better next year.

Good Luck with the rest of the fishing season.

Also just a reminder, the Paris Landing area will probably be very crowded next weekend, because of the large Triton owners Bass fishing Tournament.

I said little to no competition.. the majority of crappie fishermen sit out on the post spawn bite and dont really gear up until the cooler weather sets in..

I had about the same success that friday. Didn't get to fish long but had 15 nice crappie, 7 big Bluegill, & 1 nice red ear.

Most of my fish were in the 1 & 1/4 # range with 4 that bumped 2#. Mix of blacks & whites. All came from the outer 1/3 of the bay on creek ledges, fish'n about 13' deep in 14'/15' of water. Bobby Garland Baby Shad in "Monkey Milk" was the only thing I could get them to bite on.

Early weekenders ran me off the lake. :D Too ruff for me!
