well, not the lake itself, so much as Red Gate Dock. I know it was collapsing, and in a shambles ... and I know the Herrington Lake Association (or some such orginization) asked that it be torn down and removed. This was a few years ago, and now I'm hearing that there's a "new" dock in its place. I also heard that they blasted that J-turn hill away, and made a respectable road & parking lot.
My question is this ... can anyone confirm this
Since the Kennedy Bridge is unsafe for weights over 3tons, I don't feel safe crossing it with boat in tow, to get to the Chimney Rock launch. And, since it really isn't much more time consuming to drive to Red Gate (coming off US27 South) than driving over to Chimney Rock ... it may be a better place to launch from.
It's been many a year since I've even fished Herrington, and a lot more years since I've been back in Red Gate Creek. This is how I remember it :
It's basically where I started, fishing with my Grandparents for Crappie. If it's been "fixed up", to where it's a more viable/reliable place to launch, then I would certainly give it a try. I would have "come full circle", and I'm sure that all the good memories would carry me back to those "good 'ol days"

Where exactly is this Red Gate? Thanks for the info!!![]()
Red Gate Creek is about midlake on Lake Herrington (actual name of creek is Tanyard Branch, but has always been "locally" known as Red Gate Creek .. because of the Marina) .... Red Gate Dock is at the far back end of Red Gate Creek (aka Tanyard Branch) ... Herrington Lake is located in Central KY.
The lake is basically between Harrodsburg, Danville, Shakertown, & Bryantsville Ky. (Mercer/Boyle/Garrard counties)
Directions: coming from the South - US 27 N of Lancaster (8.9 miles); left on KY 753; left on Tanyard Road (coming from the North ... right on KY 753, left on Tanyard Road)
On line outline map of lake : http://fw.ky.gov/ViewMap.aspx?MID=16 (Red Gate Marina is #8)

about once a year someone posts about Herrington and I have to respond.
cool picture of red gate by the way.
I lived in Danville from 1987-1991 and fished Herrington more than I went to school. For the fiirst three years I did not catch much but when we lucked out and caught em in the jumps. The last year it really came together and I caught a lot of fish.
A nice man whose name I think was Ben Bray came upon me and some buddies crappie fishing behind Gwinn Island one spring morning. we were next to the bank fishing about three feet deep. He pulled up about thirty yards away and watched us and started fishing and catching. He asked if we had fished Herrington much and we said not with much success. He then told us that he was catching his fish in forty feet of water. forty feet of water wow, I was used to mississippi river oxbows and three feet of water.
He invited me to go fishing and was kind enough to teach me how and where to fish.
I kept a Reelfoot lake boat at school for two years and the novelty of it really opened doors to meet people. they were fascinated by its design. A few hated it as I could run full throttle all of the time and still leave no wake in the wake free zone, problem was, the kohler engine sounded like a Sherman Tank echoing off of the rock walls after midnight.
good memories mostly, some regrets.

You would not recognize Redgate...it is almost "yuppy." The Herrington Lake Conservation League, along with the new owners and Garrard Co. cleaned up and revitalized the marina. The entire lake is in good condition despite the storms (thanks to last years cleanup. The lake flooded a second time on 4/17 and KU is letting out water now. Watch out for floating debris. It appears to be spawn time for crappie, but the severe storms early this morning (4/20) has disrupted the bites. Looking forward to some good fishing (I do the area near the dam) in the next few days.
Hey c.p., Redgate was totally redone. The same guy who owned Sunset bought the dock and put it in his daughters name because one of the stipulations in selling Sunset was he wasn't allowed to buy any docks on Herrington. You won't recognize the place and they do have a lot more parking and better launch too. It looks nothing like it did when you and I spent that week after graduation...Rofl We'll check it out the next time we're down there.
This thread is 3yrs old & got revivedDoh Rofl
Still haven't been down to see the "new" Red Gate ... but, I'm sure Tube Man & I will eventually get by there.
