    Unhappy Herrington fishing trip

I went to Herrington lake today fishing for crappie and got skunked... Didn't get a hit except for a couple of bluegills.. Water temp 42 degrees, water color good, just couldn't get anything going. I think the water temp rising will help in the coming weeks if we don't get any more bad temps.

Tough lake to fish for crappie. What were you using? What type of structure were you fishing ?
    What area did you fish?

It was hard for an old oxbow fisherman to get used to crappie fishing 50+ feet deep when I lived there. A fun lake though. Good Luck.

I used to live on Herrington lake back in the 70s' down in Chimney rock subdivision, but I usually fish for crappie up around Kings Mill dock area. Anywhere from Gwinns' Island up to Kings' Mill is the the area I usually fish. A few years back I sunk a lot of brush up in that area so that's where I fish most. The crappie seem to start up there first maybe because the water seems to warm quicker . This past fall I sunk a few "Bamboo Condos" in that area and I targeted those this trip. The water temp was between 42 and 44 degrees and I think it needs to be around 49 to 50 to get things started. Usually in March I catch my biggest black crappie up close to the structure that is near a steep wall. Most of the time, You will only catch one or two at one spot but there have been a few times that I limited out without moving the boat. And then there have been times that I have gotten skunked.!Herrington is loaded with big crappie but sometimes they can be hard to find. Usually when you find a pattern, you can do really well. I usually throw a 1/16 weedless chartreuse/black tube jig when I find them up shallow and a 1/8 oz when I am trying to locate them. Sometimes I vertical jig a 1/16 oz black popeye jig with a 1/8 oz. piece of lead up about a foot from the jig. I always tip the jig with a wax worm because it seems to work much better than a plain jig.If I come upon a tree or a stick up that I think might hold some fish, that is what I do. I read the Ky fish and wildlife report about Herrington this year and it said the crappie population is really good. There is one good thing about Herrington crappie fishing, "There are no crowds"
