    Default Proper rigging? pic

Is it best to have the tail of your grub facing up or down? I'm curious to see if different parts of the country have different opinions. Here a few picture with it done both ways.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Most of the time I think I do tail up, but it's out of habit. I'm not sure if it makes a difference.

I go tail down ( away from the hook)
Can't really say why, just seems right to me
    Interesting question

Another thought ,when a crappie strikes he usually comes from under the bait , so would the tail down cause more short strikes?

Tail down. Jimmy Holt from the Tennessee Outdoorsman show used to recommend doing it this way. One reason is it's not as likely to hang on the point of the hook. Just like Mepperson, now I do it because it's a habit.

Prowler ... I prefer "tail down", to keep away any chance that the tail could become wrapped around the hook or stuck on the hook point. These things seem to happen mostly when casting, which is what I do most of the time ... and one reason why I don't use curly tails. Now, with the jig having a weedguard ... having the tail get stuck by the hook point, should be eliminated. But, having the tail wrap around the hook bend, during the cast, is still a likely problem (if rigged tail up).

I don't think there's really a right way or wrong way to rig them ... it's more of a "preferred way". As you may remember, some members stated that they rigged the curly tails "sideways" on their jigheads .... LOL !!

If you rig them perfectly tail down they will not only have the tail moving, but the actual jig/body wobble back and forth like a swimbait. If you have it tail down and threaded straight, it will give it that swimbait roll along with the tail movement. With tail up the tail still moves well but the actual jig body doesnt move or wobble. I always use tail down, but you can catch em either way.
