    Default Kentucky Lake Question

I've read the information on here and it's great btw.

    So here's my idea.........

I'd like to come to KY Lake the last week of March and Crappie Fish.

Is this a good choice in time?

I have been on KY one time, stayed in Cadiz and don't know where we put in, but it was past Barkley on the KY Lake Side, went over a huge, tight bridge, put in just past it, near a camping/park area.

My memory isn't much, but that was about 8 years ago, mid-July.

So, if I try to make it back to that same area, am I looking at a pretty good place to catch some nice fish?

Any suggestions as to other areas? Am I better off staying near Cadiz or go on out west a bit?

Am I better off with a guide, than on my own?

Thanks for the input and information, just trying to get my ducks in a row so to speak before I spend 6 hours driving out that way.

You probably went over the Egners Ferry bridge (Hwy 68). You probably put in at Aroara or maybe further down at Jonathan creek. Jonathan is a good bay but gets a lot of pressure.

Right on up the lake a little is Blood River. Huge piece of water. I know a guy the guides there and he specilizes in crappie. Lyndon Wicker of Fish Tales Guide Service. Here's his email [email protected] He won a CUSA crappie tourny on Ky/ Lake a few years ago. Good guy. Calls himself Old Guide on here and Kentucky Vacations at Kentucky Lake & Lake Barkley forum.

You probably picked a good week.

Thanks for the information Whiskers, I probably would be better off with a guide since I know nothing about the lake itself.

Get a map. Pick a bay or two. Put in and cover water. Try up shallow on rocks for black crappie. Out a little deeper on brush or wood for whites.

You can do it without a guide. Plus I would be willing to bet that most guides (crappie guides especially) are booked pretty tight.

I'm assuming jigs and minnows are the dinner of choice, any certain colors?

Try to fish the Tennessee portion of KY Lake.

The TN portion is less crowded, and has a lot of shallow coves that warm up faster, the fish usually bite earlier in the spring in the TN portion due to the warmer water.

I like to fish south of Highway 79.

I like to fish the first 2 weeks of April, on KY Lake, that is usually a good time.
I live 10 miles from the 160,000 acre Kentucky Lake, and the 57,000 acre Barkley Lake is within 25 miles of my house. I live 10 miles from 220,000 acres of Water.

I live in an Outdoor Paradise

Also the limit is 30 fish instead of 20 in KY if I am not mistaken.

Thanks for the information, we're trying to get it together, we're coming March 30 or 31 until April 2 as of right now if nothing happens.

The one time I was on KY Lake, I know it's a huge piece of water, we do have a map, one of the books you can get a WM w/ a lot of maps in it.

    Thanks again for the input.
