I definately think the Blood River area is the place to be. Love it!!! Been going there since I was a kid and it is beautiful. Just my opinion.

I live in Indianapolis, live to crappie fish, and am thinking about buying some lake property in Kentucky (I am originally from Louisville). My first thought was Kentucky Lake or Barkley. I am hoping it can be a vacation spot now, retirement home later. Which lake do you guys prefer? What are the best locations? Are there other lakes I should consider (must be a great crappie lake)? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.
You get property on one you got acces to the other. Just take a boat ride throught he canal or trailer yourself to another ramp on another area of the lake. Either lake and you are pretty close to the action.
Seem to be more white crappie in Barkley more blacks in KY. Better fishing seems to be KY most years.
I had the same thought as you did but this down turn put plans on hold. I figured to locate somewhere near the rt 68 overpass. It would be easy to fish anywhere with access to the bridge being so close. I also like Grand River, right there at the dam end of the lake. Anywhere you go, you'll learn to fish whatever water is closest.
Whatever you end up doing 8upwithit.... don't forget your fellow CC members from Indiana that need to come down and get a future guided crappie tour. Make sure you have plenty of space for guests . Sounds like a good plan to me. I really like the Blood river area.

8upwithit I went through the same problem a few years ago. I always said when I retire we were going to move to Kentucky Lake, well that was before we had grandchildren. Our children and grandchildren live in the Louisville area and we decided we couldnt live that far from them. We built on last home near Bardstown, only 22 miles from our children, thats about as close as we want to get. Now I still fish Ky Lake about 100 days a year I have a travel trailer that I take to the lake and also fish Cumberland, Dale, Green and I have 2 grandkids that love to go with us.This has been the best for us.
I've got a little place on Blood River on KY Lake, but I think Big Sandy south of Paris TN on Kentucky Lake is where I would shoot for.
Hey dangerousdave.....what is the best place to possibly keep a travel trailer at Kentucky Lake year round??? Thinking of doing this for now.

dkb23 Its hard to say what,s the best, but for me I fish the north end of Ky Lake. I started out in 2002 with leasing a camp site, I was told by Dave Stewrt it was a bad camp ground and he was leaving, but I had already signed the lease, and he was right. Since then I have been staying Hillman Ferry campground at the LBL area. I don,t know if you were ever in the military but they have a lot of rules and I have never had any trouble with anyone there. I,ve never had anything taken or missed. Everyone looks after each others campsite. I have made a lot of frends and when the spring crappie and redear fishing dies down I then move to Dale Holler, Cumberland River or lake, or wherever the grandkids want to go. Come Oct. I,m back. This works for me.
Thanks dave.....I found a place around the 68 bridge that is wanting $1200 a year which is not too bad. Just don't want to be dragging that camper back and forth all year long. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Thanks for your help and good fishing this spring. Keep them grandkids on the water and take them fishing every chance you get! That is what it is all about.
