    Default It's hot!!!!

Waconda, 7/17 & 18th. Sportsman chanel shot a show with me to be aired next Jan. or Feb. Arrived at the lake at 5pm to temps over 100. Stopped at Lakeside to get minners because Marty was outa town. Ordered 6 doz. & waited several minutes before they brought out my bucket with, maybe 1 gal. of water & what seem to be VERY short of 72. I refused them. I just couldn'd stand this anymore so we left leaving everything else we were going to buy. Went to Wayne's Sporting down town Glen Elder. Ordered same & was very pleased with the bucket. Bought drinks & snacks & ice. GREAT!!! "What time do you open?" I asked. "Not till after 8". DohWe get on the water before 6pm, not filming, but just checking. Fished Swim beach piles 1st.Hands Clapping Yep!!! Marina piles,,, Hands ClappingYep!!! Same piles but fish were in the tops. Got up early & headed to Lakeside for breakfast. I was going to 'bite the bullit' & get some minners there cause Wayne's aint open. Then I heard they were quite upset with me from yesterday. THAT'S IT!!!! I'm NEVER setting foot in that place again. Paid for breakfast & left. Got to Osage ramp & got boat ready & in the water. Fished the back of the cove with little success. Got late enough for Wayne's to open, so I left to get bait. Got over to Swim beach to nota bite. Marina much better but minners dying along with fish in the well. Musta been some of the 'brown algae' effect. Went to the bluffs. Dey bitin here. And so were the flys. Lots of fish 10 to 12in. Headed to Camp ground 3 piles & hit some of the fish size that Waconda is famous for. Left them biting at 2pm. Gota just love this lake. Thanks to Mike & Marilyn of M & M Lodging for the EXCELLENT diner for us. Those guys were munching on left overs for a while on the trip back. <*)}}}><

I wander if this place is out on the highway, when you are leaving town. Been so long, that I dont remember exactly. We used to fish there alot through Rader Lodge, Mr. E was an excelent guide by the way. We were leaving one weekend, had youngins with me. Supposedly they broke something, seems like it was a candle. I said well I would buy it. My goodness that was an expensive candle. Oh well. Last time I went back in there. I sure need to get out there and try for some of those nice crappie. Good luck everyone.

    Hey Chat,

I've always had pretty good luck in Cawker City. I think it was called The Little Bait Shop. The number is 785-781-4246. I always call in advance to make sure they're there. The lady that I've dealt with is Marty I think. She met me before they officially opened on a couple occasions. I'm sorry I dont have their hours. I just call before I head up to make sure they're still in business. The last time I was there was in January fishing the hard water.
I've always had pretty good luck with Lakeside but Im usually only there to get breakfast before hitting the lake. Thanks for your report. I wish I lived closer.

More people need to refuse poor minnow counts or presentations. FYI... I had one shop in Scott, AR that used to use the minimal water trick to make the minnow count look like more. Less water = more dense looking minnow clump. We bought five dozen at Long Shoal a week or so ago. Not only did we get a shy count, but they were tiny and died as soon as you tried to hook em.

Also, I really like the shops that go by the "scoop" rule. They have yellow, green, and blue scoops that will hold a dozen or so minnows of a particular size. They scoop up a big net full then use the smaller scoop to measure out the number of dozens you want. makes it quicker and fair in general. Those that try to actually count out the shinners... the fisherman is usually on the losing end.

I hit Glen Elder last weekend. It was really hot over 100 everyday. I did not have much luck with the Crappies but caught some nice Catfish with the guys from Rader lodge. Kids had a blast. Great to be back fishing again.

    Hey Chatt,
Our fish started dieing too when the livewell started to get crowded. We would go to the fish cleaning station when they started stressing and by the time we got there they would all be dead. It's only a couple minutes TOPS to get there from the ramp. It's just HOT! And I don't think there's much a guy can do to stop it.

I think with this heat I'd throw em on ice right away or put a frozen gallon milk jug in the livewell...keeps the water cooler and doesn't leak any chlorinated water into the fresh water. Sometimes I'll keep them in the livewell until they start stressing and have a cooler ready to go with ice.
FAITH, FAMILY, FRIENDS & FISHING...... hopefully in that order but honestly, not always!
