Wipers in the winter

Coffey County is my home lake and pretty much the only one I fish. The only time I reliably find shad to throw net is when the pumps are running to fill the lake. It has an excellent population of whites and wipers. Typically I don't start having a lot of success in the warm water until say January. Fish aren't only right in the chute. Follow the warm water out away from it and you can still find fish and be a lot less crowded. I'll go ahead and admit it, I am addicted to finding and fishing for whites/wipers. This last year I have really been able to hone in on them and its a blast. I like War eagle jigging spoons silver in color. I also have some bass pro spoons but don't like them quite as much. This time of year, find the food and you will find the wipers. I'd be looking in deep water on the breaks. I sold my truck so we could build a house, so I don't have a tow vehicle currently. Will be next spring before I can get out. Rav4 has a 3500 lb towing capacity and the boat is close to 3k, but I just don't feel safe doing it.

Quick lacygne report. Wipers and white bass would not hit live shad. Only lures. Sadly Only one keeper. Lots of 16" fish. Did manage a bucket of whites. Bonus flat heads and some lmb.

Couple buddies went back to the spot I was fishing Tuesday and much to my surprise the wipers were still there! One of them caught a tank too.

Fished Marion Res Sunday afternoon whites and wiper bite was pretty good on jigs and also caught some on fresh shad near the outlet.

That is a tank, did he get a weight and length on that giant? I went to Clinton yesterday and saw a lot of crappie fisherman and they were catching crappie in the channel but for me no wipers and I cannot find any shad. I am new at this winter fishing and I am fish less for my last 3 trips but still having fun trying!

Where were you fishing? My buddy went out Saturday and didn't do do hot. All day and only hooked 1 in the mouth with 2 snagged. Lol. He tried the flats, around the main lake point and the channel in the main lake.

He said it was 24" and just shy of 7 pounds. We're catching all ours on spoons, mainly 7/8oz white or silver War Eagle spoons. You have to change the hooks out though or the wipers will straighten them out for you. Look for schools of fish on your depthfinder then drop it on their heads. If they're active you'll know very quickly. If they aren't aggressive either change baits or find the next school.

Along the dam right where there is a drop off in front of the two piers at the mouth of the outlet . Shad were working best which I don't normally use shad but had son with me and figured it would increase his odds.

I have been using Wahoo jig n shad spoons that you can buy at Academy Sports, lots of styles, colors and sizes plus they are 1.99.

I've had good luck with the wahoo spoon at Milford last winter for wipers.
