    Default Bad News For Milford!

I was talking to one of the fishery biologists at Ft Riley and he said the C.O.E. told them that they are getting ready to open up the outlet at Milford and dump a bunch of water! Thinking back to last September, the C.O.E. said then that they had been authorized to drop Milford up to 14 ft below normal(Multipurpose pool level). As of yesterday Milford was

    Date: February 20, 2013

Lake Elevation: 1137.73 Multipurpose Pool Elevation: 1144.40

    Flood Pool Elevation: 1176.20

    Discharge: 100 CFS

    Inflow: 48 CFS

    Temperature

    Current: 16

    Past 24 Hours:

    High: 38

Low: 16 Lake Water Surface Temperature: 33

Outlet Channel Water Surface Temperature: 33

If they drop it another 7 ftow, there will be no cover for the crappie spawn!

Someone has to keep the Mississippi barges floating. Might as well be that good old KS water no one uses.
It's not duck season so I have to do something... :D

    Yo Joe,

It might NOT be as bad as one thinks, there are many multiplies in your concerns. I can only think of the massive spawn that started Glen Elder off on this last/present go around. You see, Glen was 10'+ on the down side and had an incredible spawn before the waters filled the pool, 10'. IMO this was because of some circumstances not generally encountered. When lakes down to a point their silt basins are left high and dry, this exposes river and creek channels that now become PRIME spawning habitat, and there's miles of them.

Some critical factors would be stable or slowly rising water levels, or complete inundation to normal pool. Continued falling water levels during the spawn would be detrimental. Cyclic weather patterns are another, however Milford has a young crappie population which itself is an awesome benefit. I'm sure there are other things but these to me are what it takes to pop off an exceptional or even good spawn.

On the other side of the coin, habitat and park mgmt need to be addressed. It provides and excellent opportunity for both, one can only hope things like boat ramp repairs, digging and breakwaters are done. Write, call, and email your Reps asking and stating these issues be addressed. Heck, invite them to go fishing, somehow that 1st hand experience seems to carry more weight. In short, be hopeful and positive.

Drain those zebra mussel infested waters! It will all come back around. I heard last summer (correct me if i'm wrong) the City of Manhattan and Topeka's emergency water plan is to release from Tuttle and then Milford.
