All the units work better keeping up with improvements. Both Cabela's & Bass Pro stores will update your units for free!!! Just bring your unit into them. Shane & I also carry a card to update units. Or you can down load from the Lowrance site. Just takes a few minutes to do this after updates are on a card. <*)}}}><

I have a HDS 7 (1st gen) and a HDS 8 (2nd gen) on my boat. Both bought last year.
How often does one need to update?
The "card": purchase at Cabellas/Bass Pro?
What other equipment needed to get off Lawrence site? Will card plug into computer? USB?

Welcome to CDC KS. Easy to check! Press menu twice. Press system, press about. It will show what update is on. You should have on Gen 1, 1.4.1.36.68. Gen 2, 1.1.39.44. Theses updates are on the Lowrance site under support. Also instructions on how to download to SD card. <*)}}}><

CC,, what would be your suggestion on getting set up with the lowrance units. I guess what i am asking is bang for your buck deal. I have an hds 5 but not the side imaging yet but would really like to get it and a another unit i could use but I am struggling with the price of all this stuff . What would you suggest?

What I would suggest is one of the Elite units with 'DownScan'. Without GPS, a Elite 4 DSI $200. A 7Elite DSI, $550. Watch for the promotions discounts at the stores. That in your price range? Check them out on the Lowrance site <*)}}}><
