    Default where to buy fingering

Hi, my friend and I were trying to do some fish farming in the back yard. We are doing it in a very smal scale first. I am wondering were can we get fish fingerings? We are not going to get alot , maybe ten of each different kinds. we want to see how well they servive in the backyard tanks during winter before we increase the size of the project. Please let me know any info. Thanks

Check at you local COE or lake office.

Ask at Orschlens as they have a fish days and they can give you the contact number since they will not have another one till spring. Going to be tough just getting 10 or so of each

What species of fish are you wanting to purchase? I am not sure 10 of a species would be worthwhile and the problem I see of having just 10 of a species is mortality. Fingerling survival rate is quite low for most species and having only 10 would all but garantee a 100% mortality rate.

More information is needed before we can answer your quesiton. What are you planning to do with these fingerlings, where are you planning to keep them, how much work are you willing to do to keep them healthy, etc...

Check with your state department of agriculture about aquaculture. And then with your state DNR about what species may or many not be legal for you to culture in your area and between them what sort of facility you need to set up. You may be on some drainage that has special rules for guarding against escapes. That lack is what brought us silver and bigmouth carps. Many state departments of agriculture have special programs for aquaculture and most of them have additional information on the practice or can refer you to them. Nearly every state now has rules in place to guard against the spread of invasive species and the spread of fish disease such as VHS, too.

Some of the mistakes you can make starting from scratch can have important consequences, better you find out before you start. In the process of the research you will find your sources and the quantities they require you to purchase.

In addition to the above, there is a supplier in McPherson, KS It's called Culver Fish Farms. Also in this same area are some aquaculture operations, they might be able to help answer some of your questions. Not to discourage or anything but you really should consult with some experienced people about this matter. I'd also bet the Arkansas board might have or know someone too. Through the web Safebait.com has some listings or did have that could also speed up your search. Food, water, and nitrogen compounds are generally tank farmers biggest concerns.

Most CoOps have regular fish trucks that come by and sell fish. The coop should have the dates and times posted. Not sure bout summer time, seems like they mostly came around in spring, but coops have contact numbers. Crappieslinger is right, 10 is a pretty small number.

"Cold up here",, is that in comparison to somewhere down south or are you not in Kansas anymore Toto?
Kansas is not what I would consider cold during the winter months. At lease not in recent years...

You might try Racoon Valley in Peasant Hill. The phone is 816-987-3488. Last time I checked they were just open on Friday and Saturday.
