someone is telling me that a 24# thrust bow mount would push my 15.5 ft fiberglass boat with a 65 hp motor plus people and equipment. does this sound right to anyone?

Don't think so. You would be really unhappy with a motor that small. Go at least 40 lb and preferably variable speed so battery last longer.

I would go atleast 43....if you can afford get a 54. I had a 43 on my 17' tracker with a 40 and wanted more. Went to a 54 and was much happier. Really helps on those windy days.

Perhaps they meant that it is a 24 volt system, which in all probability would push or pull your boat as usually 24 volt systems are of sufficient thrust for your size of boat.

I have a Minn Kota Maxxum 65T, long shaft, transom mount, 24v (volt). I turned the head around and used it as a bow mount. Within a couple of months of the purchase, the outboard motor shot craps and I made the decision to look for a different boat rather than sink semi-considerable money into a "keeprunning" gas motor. I found a boat and don't need the trolling motor I purchased.

The Minn Kota I have is virtually new. I have pics if you want me to email those.

I have a 40 lb Minn Kota Endura transom mount...great shape, never really used it much. PM me if you are interested.
