    Default jigs for bream

does anyone tie their own jigs for bream fishing? My 10 year old daughter has been watching me tie crappie jigs and she has started tying her own. we are both new to this but shes doin a great job and i've caught over 130 crappie in 3 days fishing over the last 3 weeks with our jigs. Question is what size and patterns/colors are good for bream fishing? She wants to tie her own for bream fishing this summer. WE have been tying simple patterns for the crappie..just chenille bodies and marabou tails.. Any suggestions are appreciated and a pic here would be nice if ya have samples. Thanks and God Bless!

I went fishing yesterday ina pond with a guy that used a 1/16 calftail hair pinkie type jig with an oval head, and he put a redworm on the hook, just hooked thru the end, with the whole worm trailing behind. under a cork, about 16" deep. twitching and pausing around structure. he took me to school! he caught several crackers at about one pound, and about 30 bluegill in the 12 oz. range. he's been doing this for over 40 years, and the pinkie jig is his go to bait, wheather it's white perch, crappie, bream, or shellcrackers.

You are so fortunate to be able to share the tying experience with your daughter.

There are a bunch of pics through out this forum - try a word search.
Out here in SoCal we use mostly a 1/32 or 1/64 jig with a #8 hook. Sometimes we go up or go down. A wooly bugger style is an excellent jig pattern. I do something we call a hardbody - catches a lot of big Bluegill and Redear.

Think there was a panfish jig swap also.

I like any thing between (Inclusive) a 1/32 and 1/64 with a #8 hook. I know lots of people like smaller hooks that even a #8, but I don't seem to have trouble catching even smaller bream on one.

Below are a couple of pics of some I tied for a customer for bream and I don't remember if that is 1/64 or 1/32, but you can see what I did. Also there are some on my web site other than these that will work fine in a smaller jig. I know the second one is both 1/32 & 1/64 and all #8 hooks.

This is a fly and you can make them what ever color you want.

And I call this my Wasp and should do well on bream.

Feel free to look around my site as I have a lot of pictures and you can probably get some ideas.

One of the most widely used, and most productive jig, is the "popeye jig". It's copied by alot of different people/companies, because it's an absolute killer bait !!
It's basically a ballhead lead on a fly hook, painted white with big black eyes painted on, and chicken hackle body tied on with red thread. Here's a local business that makes a version of it, so you can see what I'm describing : EFish911 Country - Where Anglers Meet

Locally, the size 0 (1/64oz) and size 1 (1/32oz) are used for many species of fish ... Gills, Cats, Crappie, Bass, etc. One of the most productive methods, especially for Gills, is to thread a waxworm/beemoth on the jig and put a clip-on bobber about 3-4ft up the line ... then fish the rock cliff banks/ledges during the monthly spawns. It's not uncommon to catch several other species, while fishing for Gills this way

It doesn't look to be too difficult a tie, if you have the components. One of the best colors for the Gills, is the black feathered version. I like the white and white/chartreuse ones for Crappie & White Bass.

This is a previously posted pic of panfish jigs. These were tied for a moderator at ****************.
The patterns (1/32nd #8 hook) in the left and center rows have caught Bluegill and Redear over 2 lbs. The UL jigs on the right are 1/64th, 1/80th and 1/100th #10 – 12 hooks and have caught big fish as well.

Nice jigs what where you using for the tails in the jigs on the left, and is there any special size hackle you prefer for the micro jigs for I have been trying to get that look when I wrap my hackle and it is just not cooperating for me. Again nice set of jigs you have there

Showed a couple a while back, check out my pics they are both there . Hair jig is kiptail, and the split tail, has round rubber for the tail, and chennile body. Should be a snap for your daughter to tie, quick and easy.
I do them in 1/64 and 1/80 oz.
