Default DIY: Making 1/40 oz ball jigs

Maybe this is old news, or just 'common sense', but here goes....

Find yourself a 1/32 oz barbed jig - then just cut off the barb.... 1/40 round ball, barbless - perfect for tying or small plastics.

I tryed two this morning - the first was a purchased 1/32 oz, its weight on a digital scale was .032 oz, just a tad over 1/32 oz (.03125). Clipped off the barb, reweighed it, it was .025 oz - dead on the money at 1/40.

2nd jig was a 1/32oz that I poured, it weighed in at .035 oz. After trimming, it weighed .025 oz.

To cut the barbs, I use a side cutters - clip thru the head to the hook shank, then tear the barb lead off the hook using a needle nose pliers.

For the poured jig, I had used hard lead (wheel weights), so I had to 'section' the barb w/ the side cutters, then tear off the sections...

Just another option for the tackle box.....

Man, I've been doing this with the 1/16 and 1/8 from wal mart. Them are the only jig heads I can find near me without driving an hour to bass pro. Works like a charm. Just beware of cutting the barb off of heads that have been powder painted, it will chip the paint onto the head, so be careful. But awesome advice there Uncle Grump.

All sit in front of the TV and snip off the collars on the UNPAINTED JIGS then powder paint. Works alot better. Slabsniper if you need jigs why get them at WalMart get them from the guys here on this site you'd get more than WM and you could get the kind of hook you want in them.
